Anyone commute into London?

You can get quickly into Kings Cross from Peterborough and whilst I would not recommend Peterborough itself the areas surrounding a rather nice and stupidly cheap think 150k for 4 bedroom house cheap. I commute into Euston from South Staffordshire - only takes 50 mins by train.

Up North, St. Albans, Harpenden, Bedford etc? It is pushing the limits of your train budget but they are nice areas.

20mins St Alb - St Pan
25mins Harp - St Pan
37mins Bed - St Pan

My monthly train ticket budget is £400.
Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Considering the fact that rail fares have gone up, and an annual ticket from somewhere like Tonbridge is about £5K pa, that could make a few places that would have been OK before unworkable now. :(

High speed 1 line is great for commuting from north Kent. Gravesend to Kings cross in 20 mins. Downside is the area is a total dump!

Its not that bad... definitely some worse places both further out into the Medway towns or closer into London (Erith, Thamesmead etc).

Ashford would be worth a look - just under 40 minutes to London on the high speed. The property prices might help to offset the rip off train fares.

I work with a few people that commute from Cambridge, Luton and Oxford. They must spend a fortune on rail fare though.

EDIT: And Slough, and Bracknell.. but wouldn't recommend Slough, nor Bracknell.

Wow, I've gone on holidays closer than that daily commute. I think you really want to be aiming for an hourish max, anything more than this has a detrimental effect on your life imho.

I agree with you in principle.
I did Bournemouth to London for 4 months whilst I was looking for houses in London having finished University. This was the worst time of my life. I was literally no use to anyone as I was up at 0520 to get into work for 0830, allowing for a shower and a short car journey to the station. I was then not getting home until well after 1900. 5 days a week.

However, a 50 - 70 minute one way commute is more than manageable. I live in West Kensington and it still takes me 45 minutes door to door meaning at least 90 minutes travelling per day. Most Londoners spend at least 60 minutes per day commuting (if not more); it's not like we all live next door to our places of work.

Well when it goes smoothly it is an hour as I only work in Holborn and live close to Trent Valley - however it rarely goes smoothly when Virgin Trains are involved does it the ******* :p Its a quicker commute ironically than when I lived in East London and used the Central line and DLR.
