Anyone doing a beefy VR PC upgrade this year, if so, what are your plans?

Im upgrading this year for sure, from 1080 and 8700K to 4090 and not sure what CPU, 12/13th gen Intel or something AMD. Ideally i'd like Q3 this year to align with the (hopefully) 4090 release coming in a couple months
Anyone else upgrading around this time, and play a lot in VR - what are your plans? im not really sure what mobo/cpu combo I should go for.
Wait for Raptor lake? just keep with 12900K or an AMD equivalent? - (clock speed vs more cores?) DDR5 worth it for VR? I have 64gigs of DDR4 in my old system that can be repurposed but if im going for new CPU I could stretch to better RAM, but might be a bit expensive, idk
I dont have oodles of cash to throw around but want a good gaming experience for VR & 4K

The new tech coming is exciting but I'm worried about pricing. All of the manufactures have played the 'more performance is gonna cost you extra' game for the past few months.

8700K is still a good CPU. Maybe get the 4090 first?

Surely the sensible approach will be see what offers best £/Perf in the GPU segment, and what interface they are using, or can use and still get max performance from them. If it is like last gen then you'd be a fool to get 10% more performance for double the cost (3080 - > 3090). Also you'll want to see what happens with RDNA3 as well, especially given some of the power numbers being thrown about. I can't imagine having to push a card at 450w in a system is going to be a nice feeling, just to maximise the performance you pair/were overcharged for.

This is why you should pay attention to my first paragraph! :)

Yeah that is going to be my first move, the gfx card

I admit I havent been bothered checking performance from the '80 to the '90 - im not in the market for cards recently so didnt bother - I thought they were 25% difference! yeah if only 10% i will probably get the 4080 instead

oh that was another thing - how do cuda cores and other SM units affect FPS in games - as I can see that predictions are 126 & 16,000 vs 84 & 11,000 = 1/3 more (and i thought the rest of the card might be scaled 1/3 down as well) ? hence thinking it was a 25% difference at least

if for VR and cranking graphic intensity i'm thinking another 25% is worth it if it can get me to 120fps with the best resolution i can. 10%, not so much

Was being generous with 10%, it's more like 5-8% as an average. Unless you needed the 24GB RAM then it was just a waste of money, or e-peen, or you like throwing money up the wall. :)

nah, I like my money being able to be used for other things, and VR hasnt evolved that far yet that i need a new e-peen
