Anyone else here into Home Chemistry?

Well from what i gathered he did managed to get a small one up and running, and was working on a much larger one, seeing as his first was a prototype.

But he got reported before he was able to finish it.

What is a breeder reactor anyway. Can i assume a normal reactor enriches the isotope whilst a breeder burns it up?

In laymans terms if you will.

Actually scratch that, i see why it's called a breeder now, it uses plutonium covered with uranium to create even more plutonium when it reacts.

Im surprised more aren't in place, i can see more will crop up when the price of plutonium sky rockets in the future.

Anyway im more interested in plasma arc gasification reactors.

Because they are very hard to build and insanely dangerous: almost any accident will result in a runaway reaction is my understanding.

As for home drug chemistry, it's a lot more complicated than Energise seems to think. If you want decent yields then you need to start near the final drug. But if you go out and buy (say) phenylacetic acid or sassafras oil then some large gentlemen in coats will come a-visiting and asking awkward questions - which is precisely how mister 2C-B-in-the-Bedroom got caught. If you want to avoid their attention then you have to start a long way back, and your yields fall through the floor, even if your chemistry is good enough to get to the final product. There's really only one exception, and that depends on how much you like the drug concerned. And you may now find that the precursors are attention-getting these days. I would suggest that neither of us do any more explaining.

Not at all, some drugs eg GHB are easily created in one step. The only barrier is lack of awareness.

For those interested in home chemistry youtube has a lot of good videos.

That was what I was alluding to. Now name another which does not involve a listed precursor (or something which grows - they are obvious).

All you need is concentrated ammonia (880, for the fogies), & iodine crystals, both somewhat tricky to get hold of for the househusband. Soak the crystals in the ammonia for a few hours & filter, the paste left in the paper is the stuff you want. You probably remember, but it's stable as anything when it's moist and volatile as hell once it dries out. There's a lovely gif of someone setting it off with a feather around the internet somewhere.

Not a problem for me. I can get stuff through a chemicals supplier.

However, even though I really really want to, I cannot. I would end up losing something dear to me. Like a finger. The tempatation is just almost too great though!

And how well do they understand when you try to explain what it means for an acid to be "strong" or "weak"?

Depends on who it is really but I can't imagine myself explaining to the average Joe about stuff like dissociation/release of hydronium (I would say H+, but then I'd have to say that it doesn't really exist, further complicating maters) and how this relates to a negative logarithm which gives us its pH etc.

Then again it depends on which acid/base theory you're trying to explain.

Ether? Chloral? Amylene?

Possibly amphetamine from Clobenzorex or Amphetaminil? I will have to check again later.

Lol :p

I made the usual array of home made explosives and fireworks out of weedkiller and sugar, potassium permanganate and sugar, home made gunpowder etc. You used to be able to buy saltpetre and 'flowers of sulphur' (sulphur powder) from the chemist, so as long as you used two chemists and were able to lie to him about what you wanted it for it was easy to get. These days you can get it on eBay.

The Anarchists Cookbook was the document to get. Usually in the form of a dogged out bundle of bad photocopies, then on disks on the Amiga, then the internet made it available to the masses :D

I did a bit of professional pyrotechnics in special effects for a bit, blowing things up basically :p

These days it's mainly chemistry in the kitchen and using combinations of harmful acids, alkalis and bleach to clear the drains :D
Pretty similar to my experiences, only I had a parent who worked for a checmical distribution company who brought pot. nitrate home by the kilo without questioning me!
The issue I found with flowers of sulpher was the residue it created when burning, but at least it dissolved.
I also used pot. permanganate, but with glycerin rather than sugar.
