Anyone else waiting for the R700?

Have resisted the 8800GT and the HD38xx cards and although the new GTS sounds tempting, im going to sit tight for the R700.

It will be AMD's first true card of their own althought im sure ATI would have laid the initial foundations.

The R700 is rumoured to be a 1st/2nd quarter 2008 release.

ATI had a good run with the R300 (9800), R400 (X800), R500 (X1950).

The R600 was not actually bad, the competition just got better.

Ive never had the gahoonies to lay down top price for a high end card on launch, but I will for this and am very much looking forward to it.

I believe AMD could take back the GPU crown although we can only wait and see.

Edit
My current X1950 PRO is holding its own at the moment and feel I can squeeze another 6-8 months out of it while still having an enjoyable gaming experience.

Why wait for R700? - Get the 8800GT or HD3870 and start playing some games TODAY man. All the gaming on a cheap card whilst you wait on the R700 is the ONLY option if you are into gaming.

There's ALWAYS the "Next Big Thing" just around the corner, but if you want a graphics upgrade, the 8800GT seems to provide best "bang for buck" at the moment, and second quarter could mean 6 or 7 months from now.

Of course, getting hold of an 8800GT in less than 6 months could be tricky... ;)

Im in no rush.

Not had my x1950 PRO for that long and it is still a great card which will last me 8 months.. Im not saying it will be running everything maxed out but but will run things OK.

Not everyone feels the need to upgrade to the "Latest thing" just because it is there.

True enough. I'm still on my X1900XT, and if you can wait 6 months, I'm sure there will be stuff out that make the 8800GTX seem like a 5200*.

But you started the thread, we're just giving opinions ;)

*this may not be entirely accurate

I usually go for mid range cards (150-200 quid) and I must say I'm really tempted by AMD this time. Low powered card for high results 2X3850 = 8800GTX !!!! (nearly)

I'm seriously toying with buying myself one of these today.

I agree, what if the R700 is another disappointment and turns out to be just as fast as a 8800GTX, you would have missed a lot of good games at a higher resolution or with better IQ.

Just get a current card in your budget, possibly a 8800GT and enjoy 6 months of gaming

You didn't mention that you had a X1950Pro and you have no sig to inform others so how was I to know. I just moved up from a X1900XT and even that card was playing my games quite well. On that account I wouldn't have said you need to get a card now ;).

Bigger screens and better IQ then the GT/GTX comes in to play as Dutch Guy has pointed out. It all depends on what you want from your games.

The X1900XT plays a surprising number of games well at 1920x1200 too.

Obviously I've not tried Crysis or Bioshock, but anything up to ET: Quake Wars plays just fine.

why bother, just get the 8800gt...

"The difference is negligible, but when you include the fact that the 8800 GT is faster, the Radeon HD 3870 actually has worse performance-per-watt than the competition"

the 8800gt draws less than the hd3870 under load...

Well my m8 who i sold my X1900XT too said that it ran quite well on medium (i think but he's not as picky as me). In Bioshock it ran well at 1400x900 (65+FPS) at full settings but no forced AA or AF.

I don't understand. The amount of top quality games that are being released at the moment, well I can't remember a period like it, and to not upgrade is silly.

And the people saying 'HD3870X2 = GTX' I don't understand the logic one bit. Buy a GTX for gods sake instead, or a GT if your short on funds. Madness.

Ah well its your money mate.

Why wait for anything in particular? When you want an upgrade just see what's the best performance you can get at a price you can afford. If it's enough to give you the boost you want in games you want to play then go for it. If it's not quite good enough either save up for something better or wait for something new or prices to drop.

I'd been waiting for a graphics upgrade for a while but, after looking at benchmark results, I realised that I would require something better than an 8800GTS or 2900XT to max out the games I was playing at my native resolution. So for several months my only real upgrade option (short of spotting a complete bargain) was an 8800GTX plus new PSU. Couldn't justify the cost so no upgrade. The 8800GT came along at a price I could afford with the performance I was looking for.

I'm now running all my games maxed out (aside from AA/AF in one or two games), although I suspect my CPU is bottlenecking me in the Total War series (even Rome) when several thousand men are running about. I'm having to compromise between resolution and settings in the Crysis demo but it'll be a while before I buy that game as I have several other FPSs left unfinished.

take a look at a respected sites review, the 3870 is extremely competitive with the GT in the majority on newly relsd games.

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/34861/118/

the GT might be faster in FEAR and FarCry but both cards are fast enough that it's a moot point.

3870 x 2 is in general a fair bit faster than a GTX, unless you believe the fixed reviews from legionhardware and the like.

I agree with the OP, all these people that buy whatever is best every time new cards come out are crazy, you must go through about 3 cards a year, I personally CBA with all the ebaying etc. I got myself a 7900GTX and I am keeping it until the 9800GTX is out.

I would consider a 3870 but only to give me the boost I need in Crysis for a few months until the 8900 GTX (or ATI version) and then put it in a media PC as it does Lossless audio unlike the Nvidias which just mix SPFID with DVI, ewwww.

i usually skip a generation 6800gt to 8800gts and if you buy near launch it will cost you more but you will get a better gaming experience for longer . i get sick and tired when my mates buy a 8800gts one year down the line for a £100 quid less and reckon they got a better deal when in reallity theve missed out on a year of high res gaming.

cheers
