Anyone ever bought a mini guitar?

I'm looking into this for my son's 5th birthday and wondered if anyone had any experience with these, I'm assuming that they tune higher but play the same (if you see what I mean) At first he's just going to be making a racket with it and that's fine I just don't want it to simply be an unplayable novelty which puts him off if he decides he wants to learn to play.

Yeah they would play the same. Basically, a shorter scale generally means the guitar would be tuned higher overall. You can tune to normal E to E, but you'd need higher guage strings otherwise the string tension wouldn't be right, they'd be a bit floppy.

Personally, i'd go the the Ibanez, very cool :D but the squier would do a fine job too.

If you wanted something REALLY small, have a look at

It's nice to play on small scale guitars, in different tunings. Makes such a difference, opoens up new ideas etc, I often use a capo just to get different sounds using open string chords.

my second one. the first had a pair of EMGs and was tuned down to A using bass strings...it got busted at the same time as my ricky :(

I recorded that guitar warriors track using the little beastie in that photo...

I remember a thread or site somewhere with a load of OcUKers submissions though, where the hell did that go? I think it may have been a link in someones sig.
 
Sorry to rob the thread, but has anybody tried one of those electric 3/4 size guitars with a speaker built in? I see them about on telly every so often - Jarvis Cocker had one on his documentary the other day - and they look awesome.
