Anyone ever claimed off the council for wheel damage?

So, i hit a pothole and its buckled one of my wheels, the wheel still holds pressure but has a big flat spot on the rim that is unrepairable and so a new rim is gonna set me back £135. Just wondering if anyone has claimed from their council for a new wheel, how it went and if you guys have any templates for such things knocking around?

Thanks in advance!

A friend of mine tried, and it took months and months. He had to attend a hearing or go to a meeting or something with them. He also had to fill out loads of paperwork. This was with the SODC (south oxfordshire).

Not worth it for £135 :(

It was BT, not the council, but yeah, I've claimed. I'd just picked up my brand new car and driving home went over a BT manhole which turned out to have a knackered cover which cut the tyre and killed the alloy.

The claim process was easy enough, phoned BT to get the form sent out and I had the cheque within a couple of weeks.

Do lot have the DOE over there? In NI the council dont deal with things like these. Its normaly the ones that look after the roads.

I tried when I ran over a deep pothole and killed my suspension (wasn't going fast - was driving a Mini :/).

I took pics of the pothole with a ruler next to it for reference, and they sent someone out to investigate.

A few weeks later I got a letter saying the pothole had been filled in so they couldn't investigate my claim further :( And I just left it at that!

I got southwark council to pay for a set of new shocks when I drove through a pothole which was unavoidable owing to the tight road and oncoming traffic. The hole was a foot deep!

I took pictures of the whole and basically demanded that they pay for the parts and labour - I suggested that I may have sustained a back injury (admitedly I was milking the truth a little) they were surprisingly forthcoming and got it sorted for me pretty efficiently :o

I tried when I punctured a 3 day old tyre. Workmen had dug a trench across the road on the exit of a roundabout and left it refilled it to about an inch below road level with sand etc ready for resurfacing. I came to it at night when there were no signs saying 'ramp' or anything and all of the street lights on the roundabout were off due to the work going on.

The council replied with what seemed to be a standard letter saying that they had investigated but because the road defect hadn't been previously reported to them that they were not liable for it. (presumably if a pothole is reported but they fail to act on the information and repair it then they'll admit liability).

I thought it laughable that they were trying to use this as an excuse as they would obviously would have been aware that the contractors had dug the road up but in the end I had other more pressing and stressful matters going on with my life and didn't need the hassle of fighting it for the sake of £50

Wow, looks like ill have to claim from them too, theres a manhole that sank about 5 inches just after the crest of a hill that has a roundabout the otherside, by the time you see it you've hit it, caught it a few times in my old Ka and buckled one of the alloys. I ended up just chaging it for the spare as i had a spare alloy as it help pressure still...if id know Southward would have done somthing about it (they are usually useless!) then i would have put in a claim  I guess for future reference ill make sure I take pictures and send them a nice letter :)

I think I got lucky... but I'm a compulsive letter writer when it comes to things like that - I get somewhat stubborn.... :o You should see my fights I've had with the congestion charge/bus lanes....

I whacked a huge pothole one evening with the front and rear wheels on my car, which dented both (17 inch) alloys, making them a bit 50p shaped and wiped out a tyre (put a bulge in the sidewall and made it leak). Typically the hole got filled the next day, before I got there with my camera. I tried for a while to find a decent hole to photo, but being the slightly lazy type I gave up after a while! I estimated it would've cost me around £150 at least to sort the wheels and that, but I never "got round" to trying for a photo again and my alloys languish in the back of the garage. :( :p

I know cymatty suffered a puncture in one of his brand new Eagle F1's when he hit a large pot hole a while back.

Went back with a ruler and camera, measured the depth, took a picture of the ruler... the council paid out for a nice new tyre :)

I was going to pull that same trick when a tyre developed a bulge on the 214... but they filled the hole in before I could get to measure it :( ********

i work in insurance litigation, a few of my colleages do recovery work the company. it is very hard, boarderline impossible, to get the council to pay out on anything

Yep, a mate of mine bashed an alloy on his car a few years ago and I think it took about 8 months or so for the council to pay out!

I know my mum managed to get payment out of Fife council after picking up a puncture from a poorly maintained pavement/kerb.

Very old kerbs with a metal edge on a narrow road (single track road and another car came...) through an old arch which was part of the original city walls.

Took some time but the payout arrived - I'll ask her about it tomorrow :)
