Anyone ever tried Vision Express for glasses/contacts?

I haven't been there for a few years but they had machines there last time I was there. The did an initial test with the machine but followed that with the traditional letter chart

Same here, they used some funky machine thing then I had a regular eye test with optician blokey.

So did they cross-compare the results of the machine with the letter chart?

I'm sure they have a way to compare numbers. Its probably for accuracy sake.

Ok, if I went in there and said I will let the machine examine me, but won't do the letter chart thingy, would they just look funny at me and proceed, or would this somehow impede the process? :o

I hate letter charts, they are sooooooooo like Middle Ages!

I'm sure if the machine could entirely sort it out, they'd only use a machine... So I should think yeah, you need both for it to be accurate...

Why do you dislike the charts? What's your beef with them?

According to someone who worked for a short time in an opticians the machines only give a rough approximation which helps the optician save time when getting the accurate measurements using the letter chart.

You're nuts.

No, I live in the 21st century and refuse to be treated with Middle Age methods.

Well, there's absolutely no need for them!! 6 years ago, when I first got my glasses, I walked into an ophthylmiatrist in Germany and all I had to do was look into the machine, wait for it to focus the symbols and print out the myopia values. No need for letter charts, as technology coped just fine.

If I could do this 6 yrs ago, why should I have to use letter charts NOW?!?! This is ridiculous.

You have to use the letter charts because you want to see! So there!

My Mrs works in Vision Express; she used to do the pre-screening.

She's asleep now but I'll ask her in t'morning if someone reminds me...

That would be fantastic mate, thanks a billion in advance!!! :):)

just because the method is old, does not make it wrong. Won't you want to be 100% sure that the glasses you are getting are correct? Or you willing to risk your sight on 1 test, when you can double check it with another one for free? It's not like it's painful, nor embarrassing.

What exactly are you afraid of?

nor embarrassing

Yeah it is. Its embarassing and humiliating. Plus, the wall chart doesn't actually take the distortion through computer usage into account, the machine does though.

Also, its easier on the ego to have some numbers read off a display, rather than have someone ask you do something that you can't do :o
