anyone familar with VW inlet manifolds. why've they done this?

was shopping for bits.. spotted this on a VW something or other (i think)

i know you want swirl going on in there.. but surely that is a bit much?!
 
if thats looking down the card port, its to aid fuel vaporiation /improve cold running . gets its heat from the exhaust manifold

ah ok, cheers. it's not something i've seen before. i mean i've seen heated manifolds and TB's -- but only by coolant, or electric elements.
 
it is an electric element, they call it the hedgehog and it can be shaved lol

ill find some pics, i saw a shaved one on clubgti recently
