Long post alert...
I'm really not a sporty person at all and generally dislike sport. I dislike what it stands for and the things it does to people. I was and still am against the Olympics being held here and I think it was a colossal waste of money during a recession (or even if it hadn't been during one) and the "legacy" will almost certainly tell a sorry tale, as it has with every single other Olympics in history.
However....
I was lucky enough to be able to go to a few events (Handball, Volleyball and Beach Volleyball) and they were AWESOME to be a part of. And the Olympic Park itself really is stunning. It's amazing we've been able to put this together and pulled it all off so smoothly. The opening ceremony shut everyone up - we were all extremely sceptical about the whole thing in typical British style but it went off without a hitch and it was classy, intelligently put together and a seriously impressive spectacle to watch. Did we do this?! The games themselves were just fantastic and the atmosphere everywhere in London has been great. The transport network more than coped - it's been better than ever! We're such a sceptical bunch, we Londoners, and the British in general, and I like that - I think it's healthy. I don't want us to become a nation of super nationalistic proud chest-beating crones like some countries. But I think we can seriously be proud of putting this thing on and showing the world that actually Britain can do things well. And we won loads more medals than we expected. And we were proud of our Bronzes and Silvers unlike most of the other top-5-placed nations.
Unfortunately...
The closing ceremony was, for me, a complete reversal and undoing of everything we had achieved over the last 2 weeks. It was crass, old-fashioned, naff, poorly put together, badly shot and just embarrassing. It took far too much from the opening ceremony but did it badly. And what it didn't steal from the opening show it did even worse. They dragged out the same tired old faces to promote themselves and we showed everything that's naff and lame about Britain. The opening show was about everything we can rightly be proud of. Jessy J massacred Mercury, we got 1 Direction not once (which would be too much already) but twice, and a good half of the acts were miming. Poor show.
But...
Anyone who made a decision to remain sceptical and grumpy about this whole thing from the start is a fool. As I said at the start of this post I really dislike sport in general and I still don't support our having put this Games on at all, but you know what? It was awesome to watch and be a part of and I couldn't do anything to stop it happening so the only logical thing was to throw myself into it and try to enjoy it. I really do feel a bit sorry for people who completely ignored it. I'm never going to forget doing mexican waves in the Beach Volleyball arena while drinking a cold beer and watching semi-naked women jump around a few feet away from Downing Street. Or screaming at the top of my lungs at the telly for Mo to win, or having a picnic in the olympic park while watching the rowing with thousands of other people.
It was a truly amazing couple of weeks and I feel privileged to have been able to enjoy it here in my own city.
