Anyone good with a soldering iron?

2-3 volts. Measurea 12V output at 13.5-14 v usually

Not sure if when you put a load on it it goes down, but putting to high a voltage into something will kill it. Putting too low in will likely make it not work, or partially work e.g. lights will come on but nothing else etc.

Yeah, it makes sense now you say it. Though Sony 19v chargers will not work at all in the 16v models... don't ask how I know this.... haha

Did not blow the laptop though, bit of a strange one, the 16v charger then powered it straight up.

hmm

Ive always been weary of the voltage on psu's, also with polarity but I'm not sure if polarity would blow things up?

Amps I always considered "it will work or not" sort of thing rather than "omg shes gonna blow!

I have this problem too on my HP and I have just left it for a few months. I might get it out to have a go, just need to find the right connector to buy.

oh and at the OP that job would be a piece of piece! the only slightly difficult part would be getting the mobo out!

If you google your make of laptop, you should be able to find a guide onto howto dissasemble it.
Easy from then on. I have done this before.

Please don't tell me you DON'T do this.

ive done that befor but it does mean taking the whole mother board out which does take time on a laptop.

I know nothing about the theory behind it either, but they do blow.

Stick a 19v, 6.32a psu in a 3.42a laptop and pop.

I thought it was the same as desktop psu's, as in, it'd have max ampage for the rail etc, but i've had quite a few die.

Thats complete and utter nonsense!!
As others have stated a PSU will only deliver the current (Amps) that the circuit it is connected to demands/draws!
Voltage on the other hand is a set value which obviously if too high will damage a circuit / component that is rated lower.

On the subject of laptop repairs

Does anyone else find Dell laptops far superior to any other laptop? In my experience, they rarely break, and when they do, it's very easy to take them apart :)

I've certainly been impressed with mine, the specs for the price were excellent so that's why I took the plunge. I built the laptop I had before that with a barebones kit and that gave me far more headaches.
