and in the meantime my wife has seemed to become attached to the gx1.

The only thing I want it to do is to be able to take decent movies with it; my future dog/kid and different places we will go.

She of course wants to take pics etc and the ways you photo geeks like (Im clueless).

anyways whats your take on this camera

thanks

I've got one and love it, I upgraded from a GF1 and it's a nice (if not dramatic) improvement. If cost is an issue then you could probably pick up a second hand GF1 pretty cheap and other than the better sensor, 12>16MP and touchscreen there isn't a big change to the GX1. Avoid the GF2/GF3 if she wants to have full control as they dumbed the design down somewhat before the GX1 went back to the GF1 approach.

The GX1 is good for movies (has a button so you can start recording instantly at any point) and has a range of easy 'point and click' modes so even if you don't want to play with the advanced controls you'll have no problem taking photos with it.

It's hard to go wrong with any of the current 4/3 cameras to be honest, there are minor differences but it's personal preference really. I've always liked Panasonics and have a few lenses built up now so see no reason to change but it might be worth your wife trying the Sony NEX-3 or NEX-5 as well as an Olympus or Fuij just in case she finds them nicer to use.

thanks for the reply!

btw was wondering about the 1080i resolution the camera can take in movies. Is this much worse then a 1080p camera (only thing Im concerned about). And we decided spending the money 600poundish for the gx1 camera would be alright.

I think the nex5n can take 1080p movies but not sure if this difference will be that much more noticable as compared to the gx1.

thanks for the reply guys - read a bunch of reviews and dpreview has a nice recent one ...
my wife and I pretty much decided on the gx1 -
her main thing was good quality pictures and something not so big (where she will want to take it on walks and just regular jaunts around town) - not going to want to do that with a big weighty thing ... and me I just want to be able to take some decent movies ...
