Just wondering, coming up to the end of school very soon and im thinking about joining the police. Any people here in the police? how is it and do you enjoy it?

The constabulary is something which appeals to me in a slight way.

It's a job I wouldn't mind doing but the only thing which puts me off a bit is the fact it's a goody goody two shoes's job.
Even though it doesn't necessarily have to be.

I'm probably going to go down the ICT or maybe ATC/Pilots line.

Best of luck to you though with your exams, as we are almost in the same situation. I'd agree though, get some life experience first !

Remember to put down you are gay and disabled if you don't want your cv binned straight away, and I hope you aren't Caucasian, otherwise don't even bother.

In the process of joining just now, taking an age. My brother is in and he loves it, has its moments like every other job but over all he really enjoys it. It's always appealed to me too even before he joined.

LOL, it's true though :(

I have 19 years in, AFO, VIP, CID, SB, High Tech Crime Unit, among about 100 other things. Great job but starts to get to you after a while. It certainly is not the same job I joined. Currently on a career break elsewhere in the world.

I'm applying now, just taking my time doing the application form and making sure I don't mess the first part up!

Maybe try the Specials before deciding, will give you good experience of police work :)

Not a police officer myself but I do work in a police control room.

I love the job that I do but it can be extremely frustrating at times.

Police officers, on the whole seem to feel the same about what they do. They do spend a lot more of their time than they should have to chasing bits of paper instead of rascals and it is sad how many of them are occupied with bean-counting jobs to satisfy the governments fetish for statistics and league tables.

The shift-work is a bit of a killer at times, I frequently have no idea what day of the week it is apart from by the type of jobs that come in.

I would certainly second the suggestions of getting some life experience and maturity before joining up. On a practical note you need to serve 30 years for the pension which means that you could wait a few years and still retire at 55.

Slight change there, the new pension scheme has been introduced for all those joining after April 2006, so you now have to do 35 years to get the full pension.

Im currently in the application process to joining West Midlands Police as a control room operator..

I really hope I get it :D

Do you have a driving licence yet? Otherwise there is no point even applying. My sister loves being in the police. Pay is good as well after overtime. :)

A friend of mine left school at 16 (last year), joined the army and is applying for a militart police position.

His fitness is great, the army will teach him to drive, and he is getting police experience although not exactly the same as civilian police experince. He plans on completing his 3 years and then applying to the police force.

The interview process will be hard if you havnt got a fair share of experience to draw upon, as previously mentioned have a look at the specials, or maybe a PCSO (depending on region)

If you are confident enough to deal with the situtions you will be in then you will be fine. Theres no harm in applying now, it will be a fair while before you would start anyway
