I'm looking at getting a Western Digital Caviar GP 1TB drive. Does anyone know how reliable these units are at the moment? I want this as my primary Data drive. I can only manage about 50% redundancy suport for a 1tb unit at the moment so it's important that I buy a good drive..

Cheers for any help

Personally I wouldn't go with the GP drives, they've sacrificed performance in the name of energy savings and whilst they've made some reasonable reductions in power the savings do not, in my opinion, justify the reduction in performance. The 1Tb drive in particular is billed as having a spindle speed of "5400-7200rpm" however the general consensus is that the access times point to it being 5400rpm but the high density platters give sustained transfers more akin to 7200rpm drives.

hmm well I have to be honest this is a data drive only. No OS, data or games, although it will have a 20gb partition at the front just incase I ever have to consider it as a boot drive. This would be for emergencys though say if my rapters fail or something. So performance is really not of consiquense. Saying that however I'm open to sujestions. What would you go for?

Hi, I have one as my storage drive for the PC, works great but it can take time to access your files.
Good as storage but not as a primary drive I think.
