Anyone painted any decals on their cases?

I'm wanting to do some minor modification to my 902 to make it feel more personal.

I've started by removing the grill as it annoyed me...I'm going to follow up by painting the side fan intake filter red. It's already in the shape of a crosshair and since I have a love for FPS games it seems appropriate :)
I'll be adding some cathodes and maybe...maybe braiding the cables (still not sold on the idea)

All that is very simple to do but the next bit is to decal my name: reiyushin (I used to play under the name pulse/bruce but there were a lot of players with similar names which bugged me, reiyushin is 100% my own and has a special meaning to me) on the left side of the case vertically beside the window...

I want to do it in a gloss black, the case itself is matt black, so it is noticeable but subtle. I'm still messing with designs but I'm liking the idea of letters 4x5/6 cm (HxW) in a sort of block capital styling to give a sturdy effect. Like below but with no curves, just angles...

I've no experience painting with spray/air brush but I figured I could mark it out on some cardboard to create a stencil. Tape the stencil to my case, spray it lightly and let it dry. (and then repeat as needed)

Does this seem like it will come out with a happy ending? Or am I wasting my time?

Any tips appreciated!

How about just printing to a transparent decal paper then just apply it. If you want a change later, just scrub it off.

Plus you can do some fancy designs in photoshop.

Will my local print/graphics shop have that?
It's an option I hadn't even thunk (lol) of...will it stick to the cases slightly rough metal surface or will I need to sand it down?

it will take minutes to make in vinyl . used to do it myself :D

you just put what you want in pc choose colour style and so on and then start the cutter. then just apply to case.

Still aiming at painting, I think it'll look better/blend in.

I'm talking to a friend about it tomorrow to see what he thinks.
I'll post pics up of any progress I make :)

Definitely cut it out of black gloss vinyl, it will look great. I have just moved house and not set my workshop up yet or else I would cut it for you. You can remove it later a lot easier than paint. Your local sign shop could help.

No.

Basically, the absolute easiest soluton, and it pains me to say it, is to use black gloss vinyl.

however, if you chose to paint it, the most ghetto way you could do it would be to mask it off and just spray aerosol clearcoat, rather than gloss black. it's not going to make much difference though.

making a mask out of card is not a good idea, you have two options really. both use frisket film,
1. have the lettering cut into the frisket film with a plotter to produce a mask. I do this quite a lot when i'm doing lettering. you would have to take it to a sign maker though.

2. cut the lettering into the frisket film by hand to produce a mask - I used to do this before I had a plotter. it works but it's time consuming.

if you dont really know what your doing with painting and masking I'd honestly just visit your local sign maker / vehicle graphics place and get them to make you a decal out of gloss black vinyl. it will come pre-transfer-paper-ed-up and will probably cost less than a tin of paint. and it will also have around the same or less 'build' (raised edge) than you would be able to get from painting like that.

If I was at home I could have made a frisket mask for you, but I'll not be back for months now.

Done the crosshair but the iphone cam makes it look awful when infact I really like the look of it :)

Still looking at the lettering, a mate of mine had a few better ideas so I'll post up some pics as I get them :)

Ty for the advice guys.

The shine on the paint gives a slight blurr with the flash but the lighting in my room is crappy without it :)

I'm loving that! :)
Looking forward to seeing it with your decals beside.

Have been thinking about a way to get a personalised design on the side of my case as well, was thinking about having it laser cut, then frosted acrylic with lighting behind but was going to be rather costly.
So had started wondering about painging, and now with the comments from some of the guys on here wondering about their suggestions. Though I've not got the foggiest where my local sign maker would be!

I printed out the letters on thick photo paper, cut them out and stuck them to the grill and then sprayed the grill satin black.

Update: I'm postponing my painting anymore on my case :) I'm hoping to acquire an 800D in the not so distant future and so to keep the resale value of my 902 decent I'll not do anymore modding :)

I'm happy with the crosshair and having cut some templates I have a better idea for future decals :)
