Hi all, i'm very tempted to learn the electric violin as i've always liked violins and noise is an issue. Has anyone got any experience with them? Presumably four string but whats good for beginners etc. Apologies in advance if this message reads terrible its done using my mobile so the spell checker will go into overdrive. :)

I play the Violin and Viola but have never tried the electric versions of either don't see the point really.

My advice is to find a teacher local to you that you can goto or will come to you as you will never be able to get it right teaching yourself. After learning the basics its a case of practice, practice and more practice, Also finding the correct size instrument will be difficult unless you go to see a stringed specialist.

Do you mean an acoustic one with a pickup inside it, or one of the silent yamaha type ones?

I've seen some video of people playing solid body electric violins and they are awsome, you can do some amazing things with them that just isn't possible with a normal violin, very interesting sounds and effects just from the way it's played.

I would never learn on an electric violin, it's something you pick up once you know what you're doing. It's not an instrument you can teach yourself either, and lessons are pretty expensive.
I don't understand when you say that noise is an issue - violins don't make a lot of noise unless you are really hard with them. You can also buy mutes, which dampen the sound a little.
