Anyone tell me which is the best NON Smartphone currently?

How can you 'hate' smartphones, because he cant afford one/cant use one/why?

I hate them for various reasons :

I personally have no use for one. I make a few calls per month and about 100 texts. Pointless paying a premium to do just a few things. Sadly this is the way it's currently going and the non smart phones are not getting much of a look in anymore.

I prefer a smaller handset, I don't see the reasons to go back to 1990 size handsets ;)

Battery lives are frankly pathetic to be expected with the screens they are powering. I like to charge mine on a sunday and have it last me all of the week.

I have a manual job and the people I work with that have them with little wallets or protectors making it even bigger and more of a faff to carry around.

I also hate how much time people spend looking at the ****ing things. They have become the new cigarette, people just seem to have to have one in their hands and fiddling with the things. I've been out with friends and you can see people on tables or at the bar frigging about with them instead of actually socialising with the people they are with. If my friends were that rude I'd just up and go home. It seems to be men more than women.

Or people not looking where they are going staring at the screen while in supermarkets or in a busy town.

Kudos to the phone companies, it's a great way to keep the charges up on monthly contracts for an item worth £100. When you look at what people pay in the end by the term of the contract I wish I'd come up with the idea.

I think I read on hotukdeals the best iphone 4 deal 12 months (at the time of reading) meant you paid about £800 for the year. Come on seriously £800 for a phone for 12 months, you can't believe people are paying that for a ipod touch that makes calls and £120 worth of airtime.

Again I wish I was smart enough to come up with it. If you had've gone on dragons den with a smartphone and said you would get £800 out of people for 12 months with the gadget, they would have laughed at you.

:D

Oh dear. I cant understand that point of view at all really.

You must hate everything then, including cars?

Not really, why can't you see his point of view? He doesn't like them, end of. Why do you have to invent pathetic reasons why, such as 'Oh he cant afford one' (Get real, it's a telephone, everyone can afford one) etc?

If somebody only makes calls and texts there is no reason why they'd want a Smartphone when a conventional phone such as a Nokia 6730 is small, light, conventional and does everything he wants.

I can happily accept not everyone wants one. However, saying you 'hate' them and then ranting on is just silly. Its what people tend to do when they cant afford something, like with many things :)

Big difference.

I personally view smarphones as an unnecessary distraction, though I have no business need for one. I have friends that are constantly fiddling with them when we are out, which I do find a little rude.

I will probably buckle soon though.

Exactly, my current phone is a SE C510 which has done me proud for nearly 2 years. Sim only contract 600 minutes blah blah for £10 a month.

It sits in a silicon sleeve with a screen protector and I don't have to worry about it while doing my day job. If I get hydraulic fluid on it at work it's really no bother as skydrol would eat through a phone in seconds.

I don't want to be working outside underneath an engine and lean on or trash a more expensive phone. I've lost count of the number of engineers I've seen ruin a good phone at work. Some have a work phone and a outside work phone, can't be bothered with that.

It works when I want it to and if I drop it in a tank of fuel, oh well.

You asked why someone might hate them, I didn't start ranting. I don't hate the phone, they are very nice bits of kit, I hate what they have turned people into, idiots not looking where they are going or interacting with the people they are with. If you need to keep looking at facebook while on nights out with friends you really need to have a look at yourself.

I can afford one, I'm just not mug enough to chuck £800 a year at a phone and contract (again the last time I looked on hotukdeals).

Perhaps I don't understand the Iphone well enough, perhaps someone could explain what's in the Iphone from the ipod touch that costs another £400 odd quid?

Well it's not about the money for me, I have a boxed Iphone 3 sitting here on my desk (A gift) but I still keep using what works for a few calls and texts and holds a charge for a week.

I'm just a little gutted they don't seem to want to make decent standard handsets anymore.

Ah, I can fully understand that yes.

I just felt that hate was a strong word!

To be fair though, for your use, you don't really need anything better than the old phones really do you?

What technology would you want adding? Better camera, newer Bluetooth etc?

Probably because they find you boring??:p:D...so instead want to toy around with their phones:p:D.

I never used to have any real need for a smartphone in the past but now with my job i do need one, thats why i rate my BB very highly...but ive always had smartphones even the first one ie the SE P800 i think it was....

Just to keep making similar, nice looking simple handsets with easy menus with operating systems that don't lock or give me any issue. In the years I've had a phone I've rarely used it for pictures or videos and turned bluetooth on about once in 2 years.

My wife wanted to try out a smaller smart phone and she got the X10 mini pro and I admit I looked and thought I could probably get away with one and they are a £120 to replace if I smash it. She has been using it 2 months and still goes on about going back to her W595, due to lock ups etc.

So many people I know seem to spend vast quantities of time taking phones back for lock ups/failures etc. Where as my phones only ever get turned off when I board a flight.

I guess I value the reliability and simplicity over cameras and apps etc. I'm sure I will have to cave in one day ;)

We are talking about mobile phones not Rolex watches. Why does everyone on ocuk always assume if somebody doesnt like something they obviously cannot afford it?

It's a phone not a diamond ring.

Some people have views that are, how shall we say, not based on any real facts or experience what so ever.

Doesnt stop them being extremely vocal about things they know very little or nothing about though.

You just have to be tolerant of other people.

Blackberry Curve/Bold, excellent phones, infact if I could choose again I'd probably ditch the DHD for another blackberry.

In reply to the OPS question and second post.

Anyone tell me which is the best NON Smartphone currently?

Sorry, should have clarified that it needs to have the regular old style phone buttons, not alphabet keyboard.

OP, just have a look around. If you come across one you like the look of, this website is full of reviews and information :-

Oh shove your roll-eyes up your ring piece.

I'd still recommend the blackberrys if he can bring himself to go that one step further, getting a non-touchscreen 'smartphone'.
