Hello there. Just want to get in a few questions before I "network ready" my flat.
- Apart from a crimping tool and a punch down tool is there anything I might need?
- When you mounted the face placeplates and sent them to the patch panel, I presume you had the patch panel then go to the switch/router. Does it look "ugly" a bunch of wires coming out from the patch panel then to the switch/router?
- Do you have any pictures you could share please? Any useful links?

Many thanks :)

Edit - bah, just realised, this isn't Networks forum is it :p If a moderator could kindly move. Thanks :)

Just run trunking round the edge of the room or run it under carpets:) In the offices I've done I tend to use trunking, but for my house I just run it under carpets.

If you plug the cables into the patch panel neatly, colour code them, cable tie them etc, it won't look ugly... There is an art to patching:)

Thanks for that :)
Can I e-mail you if I have any questions please?

When I crimp my wires I tend to leave a bit bare resulting in crosstalk :p

Thanks a lot for the pictures Zen.

I figured my BT line needs doing as well so what I am going to do is get a face plate with no modules in them. Then buy an RJ45 module and BT Module (for the phone).

Trouble is, I can't find any BT modules. Do you know if these can be purchased or not? (I'm not looking for the RJ11 style connector. I'm looking for the UK Phone style connector)

Many thanks :)

As a follow on of my previous post i'm talking about these:

Also, is it possible to get a module with an "in built" ADSL filter?
Otherwise i'll just "build" the filters into the face plate by stripping the filter of its electronics and shoving it in the faceplate :D

If you need a small patch cabinate (dont think i have any patch boards left) or lengths of cat5e cable (uncrimped) then drop me a line (email in trust) and we can sort somthing out as i have 5x305m of cat5e for some reason :)

Cheers I will drop an e-mail :D

Edit: I was trying your e-mail all night yesterday, and tried it today morning. It's not working. Something to do with your SMTP server for Nildram?

Edit 2: I tried a different mailboc, and still got this same error message:

The following message to was undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:
5.1.0 - Unknown address error 554-': Relay access denied'

FWIW, http://gallery.piggott.me.uk/thumbnails.php?album=1

All the wires are going through the loft incase it's not clear. OT, but the reason for the mains power cabling (generator + wap extension lead) being messy (i.e. non permanenent) is due to wiring regulations meaning it would have to have it done professionally to allow direct connection (instead of to existing sockets).

Until recently the two PCs in the study had been wireless clients but due to the naff cards in them kept dropping out and so my parents got me to wire them. So now the WAPs only get used for my brother's laptop, my laptop, and my sister's pc.

Don't have a patch panel and unfortunately since wiring my parents PCs the switch is at full capacity meaning my laptop is limited to 54mbps (had to sacrifice its wired connection). Hopefully will get a bigger/additional switch soon. As it is the cabling is marginal in terms of the standard of tidyness I would like but then it was all done on a limited budget so meh.

Thanks for that! It really did help. God knows what you're running though, I mean an extranet server...and UPS!! ;)
Really good setup though. What I might do is where you've got your Cat5e cables showing, stapled to the wall going to the study, I'm going to feed it through some trunking to make it seem a little professional :)

Okay here is what my setup is going to be like:

Internet -> Router (non wireless) -> Switch -> Patch Panel -> Various Network Points in the Flat

Now one of the network points in the living room is going to accomodate for a wireless access point. The reason I didn't opt for a wireless router is because it is going to be in a cabinet with the switch and patch panel thus resulting in poor quality.

Question is, can I have a wireless enabled network with just a wireless access point?

Thanks

Thanks EVH for the info. Thanks BigBoy for your help too.
Thanks for everyone else contributing to this thread as well.
I should have this mumbo jumbo up and running after my exams :)
