i'm a victim of location and looks like i'll have to go with BT broadband for my internet (i've heard bad things about virgin and the others are either expensive or dont serve my area)

money is an issue so i'll have to go for the lowest option 1 package with a 10GB usage limit

question is are BT really picky about this usage limit. have you had any experience of them complaining you went over, charged extra for this etc? (on any package)

Whatever you do, avoid the O2 Access (through BT Wholesale) package, unless you can live with high latency from 5pm - 3am every ****ING DAY!!

I am leaving them in 2 days to move to ADSL24 thank ****! Useless service!

If your choices are BT or Virgin i'd go with the latter in a heartbeat.

Put it this way - when I was younger I was with Telewest, then NTL, then I moved out and had to go with BT while my Mum kept the connection installed as it switched over to Virgin.

I get 5-6MBit, depending on wind speed, air moisture levels, and luck. Every so often BT decide to stuff me down on 512KBit or less, and the phone calls to India to speak to a robot reading from a script are about as fun as drilling your own eye sockets. It takes days for them to do anything about it.

As for the time I was on cable, well, it just worked. No fuss. No fights over the phone. Nothing. I just got what I paid for, bang on.

Even now, my Mum uses her PC about once a week for an hour. I use mine for hours a day. She gets double the speed I do, and has the added advantage of not having to deal with BT.

no wonder they have so many customers if this is what people think. :(

there are many decent isps out there who can provide a much better service over a BT line than BT themselves can provide. if you post your main requirements and the budget you have, i'm sure someone can recommend an isp for you.

have you checked http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php to see what you have available at your exchange ?

what are you looking to spend, i've just signed to adsl24 (this is over a bt line) with 30gb limit for £18.97 (currently midnight to 8am mon-fri, and friday midnight to monday 8am do not count towards the 30gb limit).

if virgin is over bt line then i would say their pretty similar.

BT is pretty anal about the useage limits... IIRC after you go over 3 times they either ask you to pay the extra or upgrade to the next package up... on the "unlimited" package they email when you've used "80gig" advising that you will see throttling if you exceed 100gig... however the email usually comes at 50gig* ish and they throttle you quite harshly from that point never mind 100gig.

* Yes I'm factoring in both up and down traffic for the total.
