I played Star Wars Galaxies from around launch until the servers were shut down and absolutely loved it, The community was the best I have ever seen in an MMORPG and haven't found a game or community like it since.

I've tried Star Wars: The Old Republic but the free roam aspect of it feels extremely limited compared to SWG, There's no real player housing apart from instanced big rooms and the real money marketplace kinda sours the game for me IMO.

Does anyone know of anything like SWG on the horizon or heard anything of a game in development like it ?

I remember an ex-SWG dev saying something along the lines of "SWG vets you can soon come home" but have heard nothing since.

Not aware of any Star wars themed games like that due out tbh, all housing IMHO has been limited since Ultima Online, it was in the actual gaming area, the rest tended to have instanced housing or areas purely for it.

Even Star Citizen is going to have instanced housing (well - hangars etc) with entrances at various places. Granted like many mmos there's towns etc but I loved the pre-instance housing/worlds like Ultima online :)

That quote you mentioned, it was from John Smedly (ex-SoE CEO) and he was bizarrely talking about H1Z1, a zombie survival game

Sadly, there is nothing like SWG coming or ever likely to come (ex SWG player myself - Farstar FTW!) so the closest you'll get is probably SWGEmu.

SWG didn't have instanced housing, As long as you were around 100 yards away from a main city you could drop a house anywhere, My first 1 was overlooking Mos Eisley space port on a cliff :)

I've played a few EMU's but most are run by people who either mess with the player base, Lose interest after a time, Never develop the game or have unstable servers.

I was on Starsider myself, Had a Jedi, An officer and a 2nd account with a bounty hunter and a crafter, Re-specced the crafter into a spy and had boat loads of fun messing with people in Restuss :p

When SWG shutdown IMO the MMO scene lost 1 of it's best "Do-Anything-Go-Anywhere" type MMO's that there will ever be with a real Star Wars feel :(

Think you might be on about the Repopulation.

They have issues I think currently, but worth checking out. https://www.therepopulation.com/

One of my greatest ever regrets in gaming, not jumping in on galaxies in it's prime.

If I had the money by winning big in the lotto I'd whole heartedly start a company up and devote it to running SWG with all the legal licenses, Adding new content frequently etc...I know so many people who really really miss it.

I am one of those people. Gone but not forgotten :'(

Worst of all, it was my first online gaming experience, and everything since it died with the NGE (IMO) has failed to stand up to inevitable comparison to SWG.

Unfortunately, even the emu doesn't quite do it for me. Despite having the concepts and atmosphere nailed, the game painfully shows its age, so the magic only really ever existed in the past and in my nostalgia.

Imagine if they just modernized the game engine and graphics *drool*

I've played every major MMO and quite a few smaller ones and nothing compares.

Sucks how many companies just drop their MMO products, I know there are a lot of IP issues, etc. but not even releasing private server binaries is poor - strangely enough they often do it to try and push their userbase onto their newer (failing) games aside from there is probably a reason why the newer game(s) aren't doing so well and people haven't jumped over of their own accord that kind of move ironically often backfires with people just avoiding their products in the future lol.

It is not a Star Wars game but you might be interested in Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. It is an MMO in development at the moment due for release in 2017 that looks absolutely brilliant. Read up about it on their website. You'll like it. It is meant to be a return of the group centric MMO rather than the solo centric modern MMOs like World of Warcraft and all the MMOs that have come since then.

The community is the main aim of the game. For $100 you get 2 copies of the game and alpha and beta access.

:(
Even when the graphics are dated noting has come close to character uniqueness

Loved tearing people apart with my Wookie Combat medic as I could not wear Armour at that time.

I also unlocked Jedi pretty darn early, Marksman was my hidden profession lol.

Think it was around the 3rd jedi on the chimmy server.

Also the guild named KDS where like a real profession army when they attacked you could say goodbye to your base.

I was on chimmy as well :) Ez guild, we used to run with KDS. Unfortunately there were way to many IMPs on the server vs rebels so we switched. I loved that game so much, had 3 accounts at one point, mainly rifleman combat medic :)

Chimmy as well. I loved being a BH hunting player Jedi.

I once got a contract off the terminals and the probe told me he was on Dantooine. I landed at the spaceport and he was there duelling a PA mate with a crowd watching. He kept knocking his mate down as I stood there watching but then his mate incapped him so I took my opportunity. I open the reticule, did the death blow and walked away. A few mins later I got inundated with hate tells and my favourite was from someone who called me a poo head.

I loved the resource gathering and crafting system, making a nice fortune with my doctor and his buff packs.

I went to EVE Online afterwards and in the Corp I spent most if my 5 years in were a couple of American IT lads who worked for SOE, and on SWG when it was live, and they swore it was Lucasarts interference that caused the NE not SOE.

We never see a game like that again :/

Image designers..... Tailors........ Creature handlers.......dancers.......

Dam you Lucusarts dam you!!!

Ex Farstar here too. Still the greatest MMO ever made imo. As has been said already, Repopulation has been the closest to it recently. But I believe there is some uncertainty of its future.

Sadly equipment and a rush to end game has ruined the role-playing side of MMOs these days. I remember spending hours trawling players towns for CAs and no durability clothing.

The borgle bat cave on Rori.

I dread to think how long I spent at the bottom of that place, trying to get a +12 Armour and Weapon suit for my crafter :D

I can remember things about that game like it was yesterday. Yomping across Dantooine to get to the crystal cave, before player vehicles had been put in and having an NPC Dark Jedi Master rinse about 12 of us in no time. Back to the star port and the long hike back (ofc we always forgot to clone). Finally getting all the bits needed to craft the RIS armour, or the thrill of being part of one of the first big cities that were founded.

God I miss that game :(

Ha! Most of my time was spent with the Acklay and NS Elders /cry. Stun baton ftw!

Threads like this should be banned. It's just too painful remembering the good times. It's such a shame people now think of games like WoW as bar setters.
