Anything to upgrade

Nononono, Quadfire is atrocious, especially when combined with a Phenom II X4.

If you do see it lagging slightly, best course of action would be a HD5870 for Tri-fire.

why is quad fire atrocious? I dont follow/care too much about ati's scaling, mainly as im on an SLI board so till I replace a lot of stuff im not going to need to know.

ha I laugh at ATI scaling....wait a minute.....damn Nvidia scaling. Still, at least crysis works on my 4 cards now, took like 2-3 years for that to not go
1 GPU = 24
2 GPU = 45
3 GPU = 60
4 GPU = 9

Quad-SLI GTX295s?! Do you use that rig for folding? CPU must be a massive bottleneck

I suppose you could try clocking your 965 further. And at that resolution I would have thought the 5970 is fine. I guess you could always add a 5870 for trifire OR sell the 5970 and get a couple of 580s (or the upcoming 6990).

Whoever told you that your system is not good enough, are just plain jealous :p.

I dont really wanna see if my cpu will go any higher as i currently have it at stock voltages and if i try higher ill need to up the volts.

The guy who told me about my rig not playing the game at max settings. Was the hardware moderator on the Total War forums.
Heres what he said:
At that resolution, your gonna have a little bit of a struggle getting high settings. You might wanna consider leaving your unit size at large.

when is it due out? if its like a year off then its possible, but if its out pretty soon i doubt it, unless he means it might not run at 60fps constant but its an rts, so you dont need that many :)

I recon you'll be fine through the single player campains on max, its when you start having a stupid amount of units on screen, aka multiplayer, where you might struggle. But theres a good chance all cards will @ that res!

Hopefully there will be a demo around feb so then hopefully that will give me a good idea on how it will run.

Recommended Specs (Recommended for optimum game play of Total War: Shogun 2):

- 2nd Generation Intel® Core™i5 processor (or greater), or AMD equivalent
- 2GB RAM (XP), 4GB RAM (Vista / Windows7)
- AMD Radeon HD 5000 and 6000 series graphics cards or equivalent DirectX 11 compatible graphics card
- 1280x1024 minimum screen resolution
- 20GB free hard disk space

It recommends Sandy Bridge!
Maybe pushing your X4 965 BE to 4Ghz will be needed!

Is'nt the Total War series more cpu dependant?

Thats what im worried about, cause your right it is more cpu dependant.
Im not upgrading my rig till Jan 2012 (so about now but next year) so im sure i can put up with it till then. I should imagine Ivy Bridge will be out by then?

It is Jan 2011. :p

I take it you mean 2012?

Ivybridge is out late 2011 i believe but is likely to be extremely expensive. AMD's new Bulldozer cores with the new socket AM3+ is due out in Q2 this year and could be interesting.

Thats when I assume I will be upgrading again, new CPU/boards which can do proper SLI and 2 or 3 680's I guess, unless they suck or something. at your/my res the CPU isnt as much of a bottleneck, since there are so many pixels to render lol.

Doh!
Yeah i meant 2012. Im gonna have a budget of around £1000-£1200 When i hit the order button in Jan 2012, so im sure ill get a quite a nice Ivy Bridge rig. Especially as all i want to get is CPU/CPU Cooler/Motherboard/Ram/Case. Everything else in my current rig will be transfered over.
