Anyway to beat rip off uk? When buying a Macbook Pro?

Well if I was to buy a Macbook Pro at a airport in the uk once going on holiday would it be as simple as price (£1,499) minus 17.5% making the price £1275? From a well known retail electrical store.

Yup, I'd agree with that. That's not really saying anything about 'rip off britain' though is it? I mean duty free works like that in most countries.

What annoys be about duty free pricing for electrical products is that often it isn't 'street price' minus VAT, it's often retail minus VAT often resulting in a far smaller saving.

I'm not sure if they've increased they've always been excessive. It's maybe why they can offer these huge discounts easily to companies/students.

I'll be able to get it cheaper just to decide which route.

Refurbished/Duty free/Student discount. Or even second hand like some.

do what i did and get one from new york :)

only difference is my @ and " are wrong way round.

Both the Apple UK and Apple USA keyboards are like that.

The main differences are that the UK keyboard has a stupid shaped return key and no # key. I much prefer USA layout.

For the OP and getting the best deal....

I bought my top-spec MacBook Pro in NYC. Saved loads! Unfortunately that was back in 2007 and the days of £1:$2 are long gone :(.
My top-spec MacBook Air I bought in the UK, but from the Higher Education store (and unlike most I am a legit student :p). The higher education price of mine (upgraded CPU and upgraded RAM) was the same as the normal price of the base model - so it is a significant saving.

Feek's got a thread somewhere with all the Higher Education prices screenshoted from the website (as you have to select your institution and it then only lets you in if you're IP shows you to be on the campus LAN)... however someone yesterday gave me http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000731/. I don't think one can buy from it (unless on that Uni's LAN) but somehow the prices are available to look at from any location :).

Thank you very much. I think i'm going to wait until the new Air comes out. I know it's a big wait as it's just new but I really want the backlit keyboard function! (and i'm hoping they introduce it) Probably do a similar thing go topspec like yourself and get the discount.

Befriend a foreign national, but UK university attending, student. Have them buy it with student discount and VAT free on their foreign registered credit card at a store in the UK.

ive just found the reciept for my 13" macbook from NY.

macbook $999
apple care 3 years $249
world travel kit $39

sub total $1287
tax @ 8.875% $114
total $1401

so in total

£910

that doesnt include the tax and the airport.

i payed a little over 1000 quid for a 15 inch macbook pro with a students discount a year ago, so yes it does seem a little steep. have prices increased that much in the past year?

The 15" 2009 MacBook Pro didn't have two GPUs, just one, and thus was much cheaper than the previous or current MBP which has two.

The difference is £100 more vs. yours for the bottom end MBP now.

Wheres the £ sign on these mate? Im looking to buy the wireless keyboard and mouse while in the US when I go next week... or another option, do the tax free shops at the airport stock mac accessories like keyboards etc?

My 2009 15" mbp comes with 2, the 9400 and 9600gt. It was £150 odd more for the 9600gt extra (got more hdd space as well in the deal)

And to don my slightly smug hat (to join in with the running theme of the thread) I hardly feel the price of the mbp as a rip off (seeing as the difference from other places isnt really mush at all right now) as it is a very well made bit of kit and everyone who has used it does tend to agree (from at least one aspect).

It makes me SICK to think how much cheaper the US is getting these products than we are. Why the hell should I have to pay £1,500 for the macbook pro I want where my burger eating comrade in america is paying £1163 a massive saving of over £300! Is there anyway at all I could possibly get around this and get myself a macbook at that price?

So it's ok for Apple to rip you off but not the Government

Yes.

I'm happy enough getting one on a student dealio. Think i'll wait to see what the new MBP's are and if they don't impress me much might just wait for the next air (hoping it'll have backlit keyboard, would be very surprised if it didn't!).

this is a very standard post.

you don't hear people complaining about an aston martin's price.

if you cant afford it, don't buy it.

or get a new job with better wages.

Alright well generally over the prices of MBPs hasn't risen more than a few quid.

My 2007 middle 15" MBP was £1350, the current gen middle is £1400.

So not a great increase really.

However I agree with the smug hat comments.
