Anyway to beat rip off uk? When buying a Macbook Pro?

this is a very standard post.

you don't hear people complaining about an aston martin's price.

if you cant afford it, don't buy it.

or get a new job with better wages.

Who said I can't afford it? Why would I pay more for something when I can pay less? I would have to be a complete and utter moron to pay more for something when I don't have to. Now everyone debating the rights and wrongs of my original post just need to go rant about something else (I hear MP's expenses are kicking off again that may boil your urine). If you'd really rather pay up to £300 extra when you have the option not to well good for you (as Christian Bale would say), this is not the GD this is not a debate. I have all the information I want thank you kindly.

Yes.

I'm happy enough getting one on a student dealio. Think i'll wait to see what the new MBP's are and if they don't impress me much might just wait for the next air (hoping it'll have backlit keyboard, would be very surprised if it didn't!).

you will be waiting a while for a new mbp as the 2010 is still in the middle of its product life, plus the air you could be waiting 2 years for as its only just come out

I thought the new MacBook Pro was rumoured to be released Q1 2011? It's already been longer than most MacBook Pro refreshes.

I thought apple refresh their lineup at a year minimum now? I don't really fancy a air on a C2D, what do you think the chances of apple accepting blu ray? I guess if Lion supports it then the new products will.

So they're available in the UK airports and you don't even have to go to the US? Lol I might just goto barcelona for a day cheaply have a nice day out and get one.

Errr, good luck with that. You only get "duty free" when going outside the EU.

I personally think VAT is the best tax out and would support a move to make it the UK's primary tax.

Not at Heathrow. I bought mine there and was never asked where I was going/where I was from. I was flying London->Belfast (albeit on the last leg of a flight that originated in Guinea-Conakry, but he didn't know or ask).

Yep, as was said earlier in the tread... if you want to avoid paying tax then that's another conversation.

At the risk of sounding like a pedantic dick :p you're not really avoiding the tax by buying duty free but traveling within the EU. You're evading it. One is legal (avoidance) one isn't - evasion. It's an easy thing to mix up but you want to be clear which position you're in whether it's for import/export tax or for any other tax for that matter.

I guess it depends how much you want to bend the rules. I've declared stuff coming back to the UK from the US before and the staff on duty just waived me through as the value wasn't that significant.

Sorry, right you are. Tax avoidance is playing the system and avoiding pay tax, otherwise known and being “tax efficient”. Tax evasion is illegal. Not paying import tax when importing goods to the UK, personal or otherwise, is clearly tax evasion.

Items purchased with in the EU are eligible for local VAT and buyers are not able to claim it back. There is also no need to declare any imports or exports; we’re part of a trading block.

If you buy a laptop from outside the EU and bring it back to the UK then you’re able to claim back local taxes (in most cases). You are however bound by UK law to pay any duty and tax on any item over the value of £40 that you bring in to the UK, regardless of weather you claimed back the tax in the country of origin or not.

Any buyer or business not following the EU VAT laws is also breaking the law (this includes buyers buying VATable items without paying VAT when staying within the EU, as well as shop keepers not charging VAT on items VATable).

You can get around any of the above, yes. You can also nick one from the apple shop or break in to next door and steal there, it’s all illegal.

HE discount only works in Apple stores, is there an actual Apple store in any airport?!

Found this quote when finding if there were any Apple stores in any airports... which there are not btw.

"Most Apple Premium Resellers offer discounts to students, teachers, schools and universities. Contact your local store for more details."

Worth enquiring...

Not true. 'Duty' and 'Tax' (at the airport) are different things. You cannot buy fags at duty free prices if traveling within the EU (maybe booze too, not sure) but everything else is fair game.

I have personally bought plenty at tax free prices (including 2 Apple laptops) at the airport travelling inside and outside the EU on many occasions (largest purchase was a diamond engagement ring at Tiffanys at LHR T5 on my way to Edinburgh) without issue.

Buying abroad is a pain. US prices vary wildly due to non inclusive sales tax, NYC even has some other BS tax on top of that, and then the cold sweats as you come back through customs UK side - plus a silly enter key - not worth it IMO :)

As for your comment on VAT I'm inclined to agree with you, everyone has to buy stuff and it'd reduce the money lost by people doing 'cash in hand' work drastically.

SUPER SAIYAN VEGETA,

*ehem*, now that I have your attention, I'd just like to give you a little tip, I travel a lot and customs are the biggest jerks (not to say the A word)(even bigger then police/airport security staff) in the world.

If you do buy it in the states or another country, get rid of all the boxes and everything otherwise you'll have to pay import tax.

And for the people going on about tax evasion, stop being mugs, it's amazing how the brits love to be ripped off by their nanny/nazi state government.

Btw, I thought that in the UK, Apple stores don't give student discounts and you have to order online connected to your university network or over the telephone.

Am i wrong?

Because the country would function perfectly if we all did that?

Country would function even more perfectly if there wasn't so much corruption with state workers as well.

Haha, kinda ironic that the working class is expected to be honest while the people who run the show are as corrupted as it gets.

You only need to be on a uni network to get past an initial gateway. After that you can copy down the URL (which is distinct per uni) and access the HE store from anywhere.

Yes, you are wrong :p.

I've got the Apple Student Discount in an Apple Retail Store. The bloke wanted to see some form of proof (I used my Uni ID card) and wanted to note down the University postcode (I googled it). He then had a black folder full of all the different models in store and what percentage the Student Discount was on each, and then in his iPod App after scanning the barcode of the box he just typed in the percentage his black folder told him.
