yeh it's easy enough to do the basic adjustment in your head or at least with a calculator (I normally use an ND400 or ND500 so dividing the shutter speed by 400 or 500 is easy enough).
It's more the fiddling with it afterwards bit when I want to vary the aperture, shutter speed or ISO and keep the exposure the same. Normally I count clicks (e.g. 3 clicks one way on shutter speed means 3 clicks on aperture the other way), but when factoring in the ISO as well and also trying to bracket the exposure a bit, It's easier to lose track after taking 4 or 5 shots. When you're talking 30 second exposures it's a big timesaver to get it right first time
. I wanted to combine it with a timer so I could time bulb exposures easily as well
