After reading the other asteroid thread I saw some other information

http://www.guardian.co.uk/space/article/0,14493,1660485,00.html

Seems a possibility as the odds aren't as low as most are for an impact. Do you think we'll be able to do a anything in time if they find in 2029 that it is on course for impact with Earth?

I'm not sure most governments will want to put money into a project that will fall outside of their term even if it could save the planet. I think nothing will happen until 2029 and if they find out it is heading for us then everyone will be in a panic.

Very interesting stuff though.

The guardian article is very outdated. They took more accurate readings, and its gonna miss us. Something like a one in 624,000 chance. I read it recently too, dunno why that number sticks in my mind.

Why do people care about this sort of thing, 100 years ago we used to live and just deal with it, we didn't know if something was gonna kill us all in 20 years. I think the effects of tampering with it could cause knock on effects to a greater magnitude.

I thought the readings were about the 2029 one missing us? I read they thought that could hit us before but a 2006 reading showed it would miss but could put it on course to hit us in 2036. Do you have a link for that?

New Analyses Identify a Small Possibility that Asteroid 1999 AN10 Could Collide with Earth in 2044 or 2046

sorry think that is different one!
LINK
The impact probability for April 13, 2036, is estimated at 1 in 45,000. An additional impact date in 2037 has been identified; however, the impact probability for that encounter is 1 in 12.3 million.

Maybe because we don't want to die? :p I don't think that really helps because years ago women died in childbirth and we died if we caught a disease that we can not treat. Should we just live in ignorance? If a problem can be solved then why shouldn't we try? Anything we do could have huge consequence, butterfly effect but we never know. We can only do what we feel is best at the time without hindsight.

Seems to change a lot based on new calculations though so I suppose it could still happen, perhaps at a later date but as they are so uncertain it's slightly worrying. It is after all just a prediction but I hope they figure out a way to stop it happening before then.

WRONG! nuking is the answer to all of life's problems. Do you know nothing?

Possible impact effects

Area where the asteroid could have impacted on Earth.

NASA initially estimated the energy that Apophis would have released if it struck Earth as the equivalent of 1480 megatons of TNT. A later, more refined NASA estimate was 880 megatons. The impacts which created the Barringer Crater or caused the Tunguska event are estimated to be in the 10-20 megaton range. The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was the equivalent of roughly 200 megatons.

The exact effects of any impact would have varied based on the asteroid's composition, and the location and angle of impact. Any impact would have been extremely detrimental to an area of thousands of square kilometres, but would have been unlikely to have long-lasting global effects, such as the initiation of an impact winter.

meh wont have to worry about that - we'll be dead when ati release their 3870X2. unless someone gets theirs on the day and gets to the hit spot of the asteroid and shows the asteroid the card.
