Apophis the asteroid that could end the world in 2036

Oh dontworry about it, by that time we will have a reverse traction beam that will simply be able to push it away from us :p

I am not worried. According to the climate change greenies we will have all drowned by then by rising sea levels.

Guess there is evenless point in paying anymore into my pension.

Na, we don't need to worry about that either, according to my geophysics lecturer the earths magnetic field is going to flip within the next few hundred years. When that happens we will be wishing it was global warming.:p

Don't be so sure on that the prevailing wind is west>east, so even though we won't be hit we would probably be the second worst affected place. I vote Australia TBH:D

Lol I bet we'll see an asteroid hit before that happens.

Hehe, thats encouraging if you survive the asteriod then you still got drowning to look forward too. Even if you are a really good swimmer then the flip in the Earth's magnetic field should finish off the remaining fitness fanatics.

I sa y the Americans will nuke it. Imagine how much money that will save us in visual effects when they decide to make Armageddon 2 :p

there's no way to say WHEN this will happen... it's not likely it will happen on the scale of "hundreds" of years... but get to thousands, and then 10s of thousands and well lets just say it will definately happen... just we don't know when... however historically it is now well overdue so it could happen tomorrow!

we have already noticed the signs of this happening... look up information on how much the magnetic north pole has been "wandering" from true north lately.... it is starting to deviate more and more.... perhaps a sign?

if it happens though who knows what will happen... worst case scenario is that the flip takes such a long time that we are left with no effective magnetic field and are therefore exposed to the worse of the sun's radiation... that = good night humans unless we invent factor 1 million sun cream :)

Yeah, if the risk will appear too big I'd imagine the US would launch a nuke to change it's course a small bit. Not fantasy stuff though like drilling and breaking the thing in 2 though lol, just a minor course adjustement so it's 100% sure the thing flyes past us and not at us.

Meh, just hope it doesn't happen till the human race is in safety, as in, on hundreds of other planets and on space stations, yes I live in fantasy land lol, but I do think we'll eventually in the next 400 years if we survive, do space travel & colonization.

It's happened many times before and there is still life on this planet. It is not an end of civilisation event. And radiation isn't that difficult to block.

Apologies, my english is terrible tonight. What I meant was if we blew it up with a nuclear device it would turn the material into radioactive material.

"Clean bombs" leave relativley little radioactive material after the explosion and by the time it hits earth significant decay would have occured.

i know it has happened many times before... however it doesn't happen the same each time - i believe there has been some work done (as far as I know) to correlate some of these magnetic reversals to extinction events.

Like i said, if the flip happens fairly quickly we are ok ... although civilization will be in some degree of chaos (gps, compasses, navigation, etc, etc) can all be well smegged....

BUT some models have shown the pole reversals can take such lengths of time that the Earth may be left in a period of "limbo" where we have no magnetic shield... I'm not saying this will happen - i'm saying it can.

If that is the case we have no protection from solar radiation and wind... this is a problem if the flip doesn't happen quickly.

After reading the other asteroid thread I saw some other information

http://www.guardian.co.uk/space/article/0,14493,1660485,00.html

Seems a possibility as the odds aren't as low as most are for an impact. Do you think we'll be able to do a anything in time if they find in 2029 that it is on course for impact with Earth?

I'm not sure most governments will want to put money into a project that will fall outside of their term even if it could save the planet. I think nothing will happen until 2029 and if they find out it is heading for us then everyone will be in a panic.

Very interesting stuff though.

This kind of stuff happens all the time.. not worth worrying about !

That was more of a joke post than a serious one, but my lecturer (30+ years in palaeomagnetism) reckons it'll be in the next 400-600 years. I'm a little sceptical of that myself tbh, as 'overdue' is always used when the average number of years has passed, neglecting to remember that some happen after 10,000 years and some 10,000,000 years. He stated something about the South Atlantic magnetism going bit mental recently, which is a big sign that something is going to happen, supposedly. As you said yourself from decline>switch>full again can take around 10,000 years, it all depends on where along that cycle we actually are at the moment.

Humans will survive almost certainly, although rates of cancer will probably inrease exponentially and life spans could be decreased drastically during the switch.

Like i said, if the flip happens fairly quickly we are ok ... although civilization will be in some degree of chaos (gps, compasses, navigation, etc, etc) can all be well smegged....

A bit more than a degree of chaos, when power stations start going down, the national grid turns off, microchips get fried and satellites stop working it'll be absolute chaos for most of us. Humans will pretty much go back to the stone age, unless we protect all electrical equipment from the solar storms.

But yeah, if you listen to all the scare stories humans are history, meteors, super volcanoes, giant tsunamis, magnetic reversals and eventually the sun frying and swallowing us up. Global warming is the least of our worries tbh!:p
