What about new Macbook Pro models?
I thought they were due soon?

They did a small speed bump to the mbp so you can get a faster i7 in it (I think!)

I loved hearing a glaswgian bloke unbox that! very random...

Its a big shame the air hasnt got the back lit keyboard to! Best tiny feature of mac's...

MBA still seems to be the ginger stepchild of the Mac products, I just don't see the point in the thing.

It's less powerful than the MacBook and MacBook pro, it's thinner but MB/MBPs aren't even that thick to begin with, the only thing it does have going for it I suppose is that the screens are smaller if you go for the 11" version - which gives it a small boost in portability.

Has anybody ever had a notebook where thickness hampered the portability? I can understand how the 11.6" takes up less room but the 13.3" is just going to be the same but thinner. Seems completely pointless, even more so than the 11.6" version.

I think if you're constantly on the move it's a good product. Although I think the battery life should be far higher for that purpose (the 13 has a longer battery life) - the standby life is good though.
Obviously they had to cut down the dimensions of the batteries to reduce the overall size/weight which led to the removal of the backlit keyboard. A move which I think actually misses the point with execs on the run. If you're stuck in a plane on an overnight flight, most execs are in business class or cattle class. Maybe in the back of a car.. you want that backlit keyboard and battery life.

4.5 pounds vs 2.5 pounds is a quite big amount.

Besides, because YOU don't see the point doesn't mean there ISN'T a point.

I have a MacBook Pro only because I needed lots of HD space, otherwise I'd have a air too!

As I said earlier - I can see the point, people HAVE been asking for it and it WILL sell well.

Simples.

The thickness does play a part. I changes the cases I use for my iPad for that reason. I use the apple case when i put it in my camera bag because to save room and it is the only case that fits. When i have room i use the dodocase.

As for does it have a place?

iPad isn't that long ago, and remember people were dissing it and how pointless it was? Saying it doesn't have a FULL OS, giant iPhone, and look how well that sold, seriously, look at the numbers. The MBA will sell, probably not as well as the iPad as there is nothing like it on the market, but there isn't anything like the MBA on the market either, similar yes, but not the same. Not dual core with that weight, size and battery life.

One thing though, the charger for it....if it could use the same as the 10W ipad one then it would be better....

...and going by Apple's SSD transfer speeds it probably isn't as quick as a normal SSD.

I had the last generation 2.13GHz - 2GB - 128GB SSD MBA. It was excellent in OSX apps appeared instantly, I watched many a HD films on it, completed Red Alert 3 on it and played other games.

I see no difference so far from Youtube videos, yeah the GFX is new but I'd say its still probably on par with the 9400m, nVidia like to rename everything.

It really comes down to the build and sizes of the MBAs thats new and exciting, hardware wise it really isn't anything new.
