Apple post record profits.

It isnt just making stuff smaller though is it ?

the new ipod nano is a masterstroke in design. There just isn't anything out there offering a multi touch display that small.

I'm sorry what new ideas have apple come up with?

All the have done for all their products, is copy existing ideas, tart them up a bit and market the hell out of them.
iPod, iTunes, HCI and user-oriented approach to OS design, usable multitouch implementations on small devices

They haven't "tarted" ideas up, they have implemented them properly.

Eh?

If they are not the first to come up with the idea, how can they be the trend setters? Surly they must be the trend follower.

I mean setting trends with consumers. For example their have been tablet's before the ipad but nobody cared. Then the ipad comes out and they sell shed loads and now every company and their nan are bringing tablets out.

Also being the first does not mean your setting the trend , the most influential set the trend. A company wants their new t-shirt to become popular so they give you the t-shirt to be the ambassador for the brand. They sell 2 more. Not happy with the sales figures they give the top to Brad pit and the sales are now though the roof and everyones wearing them as its the new cool thing, Now who set the trend?

I was merely exaggerating to get my point across without searching for the actual prices. £130 for an operating system and £21 for a cable, still pretty excessive? Yes, I do pay the prices and find them a extortionate compared to PC software/components/cables.

£130 isnt for an operating system, its for an operating system and £70s worth of office suite

and nobody pays that anway, because its cheaper just to buy the £25 upgrade each time. Since when can you get an upgrade to the latest microsoft OS for £25 ??

Even the OEM copies are nearly 3 x that price.

And considering the RRP of Windows 7 Home premium full (what you get in the apple box set) is £149,99 without an office suit, the OSX software is very good value. Even accounting for the fact you can get a discount on that RRP and get it for more like £110, its still only £20 cheaper than OSX and with no office suite, and nothing like as good as Ilife09. Ilife 09s real time HD video editing is worth the £130 on its own, let alone the fact you get an OS and office suite with it.

There is hardly anything on the PC to touch imovie09, and windows movie maker is a childs toy in comparisson.

I can't justify buying any apple product, because imho they're simply way too overpriced compared to the competition. €851 for an iphone 4 (32gb, the only imho worthwhile version, I use 28gb on my N97 let so on a phone with such a massive app library I'd need more)? And don't get me started on macs...

As long as they don't lower their prices there's no way in hell I'd buy one. Same as I wouldn't buy a golf when a skoda or seat does the same cheaper.

Your missing out information why osx should be so cheap because of the fact it's locked to hardware that's right you buy it and can only use it on a small number of devices Windows isn't like that you can even use that on macs.

Another note is ms built windows apple did not build mac osx they yet again took it and did some mods to unix which is all apple ever do they don't ever come out with there own ideas.

Say what you want about Apple but dam they sure know how to make money that takes this year total profit to $14Billion. I see them becoming the most profitable company in the next few years.

Most profitable company in what terms? Best profit to costs ratio or the company that makes the most overall profit? Or something else entirely?

Eh?

I don't think it was the best explanation but if I'm getting the point, Apple may take an existing idea but the real genius is in the way they package it and market it, their solutions tend to just work and most look good/elegant when they do - essentially they are a market definer as until that point there may be niche examples of the concept in use but no/little mass-market penetration, Apple brings that and so you could say they are the trend setter. You often pay a bit of a premium for Apple products but c'est la vie, they certainly do know how to make money.

I've got no great love for Apple - I don't like a lot of the products, I frequently dislike the marketing and often abhor their business practices (a lot of criticisms applied to Microsoft in the OS market could equally be applied to Apple in the MP3 downloading market yet it's rarely mentioned) but I can't help recognise that they're very good at what they do. Whether most of it needs doing is another issue entirely but they've got the market so I guess people do believe they need the products.

Where do you think microshed got there idea from?

Are we going to point out that both nicked the idea of a WIMP environment from Xerox?
