Apple's Delivery Times = Shoddy at Best

Over there
So on the 20th April, I placed my order at the Apple Store UK Online. £1709 it cost me. I made a modification to my configuration which meant it would take 3 days before it would be shipped. It was actually shipped one day eariler then expected - and I was given a delivery date of 2nd May (would have been 1st May if it had not bee bank holiday). Given that TNT tracking said that it was coming all the way from Shanghai in China, I thought it was probably acceptable to take nearly 2 weeks to deliver my new, expensive computer.

I didn't think any thing of it... that is until this morning when I recieved a package through the normal post for a pair of earphones that I ordered for my iPod through e-bay. These too have come from China, except Hong Kong rather then Shanghai. These were despatched on the 25th April, a full day earlier than my Macbook was despatched.

Looking at my TNT Tracking, it took a FULL three days to get from Shanghai to Arnhem in Amsterdam, and has been sitting in Amsterdam for the past 24hours.

So my question really is - how can a pair of Earphones that cost me 30 pounds, be shipped to me in 5 days, and it take nearly 2 weeks for a huge company to send me a 1.7k laptop. I would have thought Apple would have used some supberb express fast light speed courier.

How on earth is this 'shoddy'?

They have given you a delivery date, which hasn't passed yet and it looks like the laptop has got most of the way here, hardly cause for complaint yet!

Welcome to Apple customer service, wait until you try to get a warranty repair done it's either fantastic or dire. There is no happy medium with Apple! :(

Apple - Think different!

Sorry Apple - I think the same of you as I always have...

Cheaply made products, all style and no substance, crap adverts and shoddy support.

Oh...and now monopolistic...and you complain about Microsoft. :p

That's a nice can of worms you're holding. I'd offer you a can opener, but it doesn't look like you need it. ;) :D

Powerbook for the lose tbh.,

I havent had any trouble with Apple. My laptop charger once broke, they sent a new one the next day. Delivery times have been pretty good. Always under the stated time.

MS are being forced to open up their software - Apple aren't though...

Same with iTunes...

Anyway - only Apple product that I've ever liked was the Mac Classic - even then cos at uni I got 4 dirt cheap and put a large sheet of glass on the top and used them as a coffee table that could smile at you. :D

Apple = Style/Badge > Substance

Kind of like BMW as well...

I had to wait 4 weeks for my Mac-mini to be delivered even though I was quoted 3 days at the time of ordering.

What is this 'can of worms' thing, i dont get it.

Also, i though apple was more about the customer, but they do seem to just scam you out of every last penny (i mean whats with ipods not coming with wall chargers??)

Is it a macbook pro? IF so let me know how it goes, im in the market for a new laptop for uni.

It's Apple what do you expect tbh!!

A very good service. My Macbook Pro (custom build to order config) was ordered on the Thursday before Easter. It was shipped on a saturday from Shanghai and I had it by the Thursday after Easter. 2 bank holidays and a Sunday didn't stop my shipment. But then its not actually Apple doing the work. It was TNT. So kudos to TNT for doing something good.

To balance the scales a bit, I've had nothing but outright fantastic experiences with Apple. Delivery, quality of products and customer service have all been outstanding. I don't have time to delve through all of this anti-Apple rubbish, but this post particularly caught my eye:

Cheaply made products? Cheap in relation to what Apple sell them for, granted, but certainly not cheap in the build quality department. Apple laptops, for instance, are made by Asustek, who have an excellent reputation when it comes to build quality. All style and no substance? Find me a laptop which can rival, or even beat, the 15.4" 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro's technical specifications for less (£1429 inc. VAT is the price to beat). While you're at it, make sure it's 1" thick and comes with a load of great software (iTunes, iPhoto, Garageband etc.). Really, I'm genuinely interested as I'm about to drop £1500 on this particular MacBook Pro ;)

Crap adverts and shoddy support? Personal opinion, I guess. I prefer to disagree on both counts :)

I'm a little confused here.
Is this a wind up?
Apple give you a delivery date of May 2nd and according to my PC its April 29th.
Shouldn't you be posting this on May 3rd?

yea! lol

Apple has been fine with me. 3 day delivery of my Custom PM G4 in 2002, its been fine ever since. Bro's PC died yesterday.. :( *dell* ahem, 1 year old...

Also when my dads K/B died 2 years since purchase, not only did they send one, but when that didnt work, they sent him ANOTHER ONE! no questions. I got these two K/Bs and I gave my dad the original.

Apple have been A* with me and my dad.

I am currently saving for my upgrade G5 :D

The point I am trying to make is that why does it take so long for them to deliver a 1700quid computer, and yet I ordered a pair of headphones off some one on Ebay (who is not a company) and recieve them before my computer. Yes they are sticking to delivery date - I just do not understand the reason why it should take this long.

This is the info from the TNT Tracking page.

29 Apr 2006 19:59 Northampton Hub Consignment Received At Transit Point
28 Apr 2006 18:59 Arnhem Hub Consignment Received At Transit Point
28 Apr 2006 11:05 Amsterdam Consignment Received At Transit Point
25 Apr 2006 12:00 Pudong International Airport Potential Connection Delay
25 Apr 2006 10:25 Shanghai Shipped From Originating Depot
24 Apr 2006 10:03 Shanghai Consignment Received At Transit Point

It stayed in Shanghai for 3 days doing sweet FA. It only appears to actually have had a steady flow of movement as of Yesterday.

If it arrives on Tuesday , it was a shade under 2 weeks for it to be delivered. I just think its bizarre for a high profile company such as Apple to have such long delivery times for their top of the line products.

Also,

Let me ask this question :-

If something goes wrong with my Macbook - does it have to be returned to Shanghai? Or is it a place in Ireland that deals with repairs? See this long delivery time has made me think that if something does go **** up with it - and it takes 2 weeks do a one way trip - to do a trip of there, repair and back - you're talkin a month?

Or am I wrong?
