Apples ridiculous prices compared to PC's of same spec

who cares? shouldn't the argument be which OS works best?

I own both an imac and several PC's. Before W7 i preferred mac, now I prefer W7. W7 is far more productive in an office environment, for me anyway. osx window management sucks.

I have Windows and OSX machines - I prefer OSX every time.

The intergration with other devices makes it easier for me.

The support is fantastic from Apple and it suits me.

I'm not fussed that they cost more, I like them more.

Irrelevant, as the hardware the Apple sells is fully supported.

Not irrelevant as i was talking about the OS and platform being more limited, so it's perfectly relevant. The fact that Apple only have a limited selection of hardware to choose from just makes it more limited.

I didnt realise FF now has hardware acceleration on OSX. But you can bet it wont be as good. Apple have nothing like MS's Direct2D which is specifically for this kind of thing and improves font rendering.

And as for OpenGL being dated, look at your system info as someone else said. It's another reason why hardware acceleration for any kind of software will perform worse on OSX.

For Mac? That's probably because it's not a necessity. There's ClamXAv, iAntivirus and now Sophos that provide free AV.

It's certainly is as viruses and malware for OSX are on the rise. OSX is considered less secure than Win7, even the AV companies have admitted this. MS have been pro-actively addressing security for decades. Apple just play it down. Anyone at a hacking convention will tell you the same, and OSX is usually first to be broke into at these conventions. Apple simply rely on there lower market share to keep them safe, but you are probably are more safe because of this even if the OS is less secure.
If you look up in the thread i posted about a friend getting a virus on her MacBook - Which Apple would only replace if she agreed to a non-disclosure agreement to not tell anyone about it.

I gotta say I prefer W7 to OSX

I heard OSX doesnt have a decent alternative to MS Publisher? although no great shakes.

I have an Iphone and find it fantastic, so much better than my experience of windows phones.

I have spent a bit of time using a powermac G5 with the twin dual core xeons but it just seemed sluggish :( put boot camp on and it ran windows xp like nothing I had ever seen before .

I find £4k for a desktop absolutely ubsurd, thats not to say the G5 was far off that price but thankfully it wasnt out of my pocket :)

The OP has a point.

People in this forum don't have to pay a premium for technical support, most of the times we know more then the guy who's servicing them.
People in this forum know how to avoid viruses.
People in this forum don't buy from Dell or PC World (I hope)

The giant price hike you pay for a Mac is ridiculous but then again, Dell, PC World, HP and most other big companies do the same thing, it's not just Apple. If you build it yourself it's ALWAYS going to be cheaper then going to a multi international company that ships millions of units world wide and aren't afraid to rip people off.

Macbooks are actually pretty reasonably priced compared to other laptops for what you get and so are iMacs, show me a computer in PC World or Currys for less then £1500 that comes with an i5, 5770, 4GB of RAM and a 27.5in 2560x1400 resolution panel.

Are the macbook pro workstations very expensive? Yes, but then again, the people who are going to buy them can afford to do so and are probably designed for business. Look at the Apple mini for home users with little computer use, they are well priced as well.

By the way, I'm not a apple fan boy, I don't or have ever owned anything made by Apple (not even an ipod) and I hate the OSX and prefer Win XP, Win 7 or Linux, but what's stated above is fact if you take your time to compare prices, don't compare it to what you buy here and build yourself, compare it to companies like Dell, HP, Dixons, etc.

MacBook Pro has i5/7 only the humped 13" has c2duo what hardware do u need to detect with OSX when u can only use it on a mac which by their very design run OSX, my mac worked straight out the box with no messing about with drivers, if I build my own pc I would spend hours setting up windows. Two different products but easily mac wins hand down for user experience

On another point you don't get anywhere near the same amount of customer service from the likes of dell or hp. Apple simply ruled at keeping it's customers happy, if it breaks I take it to an apple store and they fix it, most of the time same day! Would acer, hp, dell or pc world do that? Didn't think so!

Do you have any sources for this? I'm assuming you'll come up with the recent failure at pwn2own, but do you have anything else?

I can't comment without knowing more, but I'm very much disinclined from believing that.

Some people enjoy building their own totally custom pc, others do it to save money - doesn't mean its a requirement of having a pc, buy from Dell and you have a working appliance out of the box...Just like a golf...i mean apple :p

Less customers to service usually = a better service..

Fair point, that is one of Apples strengths, although dell, acer and hp dont have "stores" to my knowledge that people can just walk into - this allows them to cut costs and pass savings onto the customer. PC world will probably attempt to fix your problems but due to the diversity of a "PC" this is unlikely to happen quickly.

Essentially when you buy a Mac, it eventually dawns on you that you have been royally ripped off and so you have to praise it and support it and make sure all your friends buy one so you don't feel such a douche.

I really don't see the point of Apple products, they are like the Toyota Prius, whitewashed sepulchres.

I admire Apple in that the company is very innovative, but then once it launches a product, someone like Asus comes out with a product that is twice as good for a quarter of the cost.
