Applying for an internal position… should I tell my manager?

I want to apply for an internal vacancy within my company, but its unlikely I will get it as I don't have the experience. I am currently working in Credit Control, and would love to make the leap to Marketing.

Considering this... is it worth telling my manager my intentions?
 
Yes, if you are a valued member of staff the manager should be happy to help you stay with the company even if its in a different dept.
 
Yes. 99.9% of the time the manager will find out anyway and its far better for your working relationship if you went to them first. Also, they might try to make things better for you rather than lose you ;)

Plus : She may help you with your application or be able to put in a good word, based on your present role.
 
Also, your current manager may hear about your intentions from a third party, and possibly feel agrieved at being left out of the loop.
It would be far better for you to be up-front. :)

Has anyone moved to a new position internally? Ive never worked in Marketing before, but I would really like to get my foot on the ladder so to speak.

I am quite willing to go to college to gain a qualification, could this help my case?
 
In my experience (limited), any internal application & profile states that you must inform your manager if you are applying for this position. I know that will be a company specific thing, but it makes sense too.

I don't see any benefit to not telling them, chances are they'll need to complete an internal reference for you anyway.

I've moved around 5 teams in 5 years at T-Mobile - 3 of which have been setting up new teams, getting everything running OK then moving on, the last move was well out my comfort zone though - so make sure its what you want :D

Ive always told my manager that im looking at moving, but its also company policy that you notify your manager of your intentions.
 
I work in Marketing and have done for far far too long :D Just finished my final set of CIM qualifications (pending results) and am more than happy to answer any questions you might have or offer advice.

I went for an internal position last year. I got the job but turned it down as my manager at the time offered me more money to stay and better career prospects. The protocol is definately to tell your line manager as after all, the person interviewing you will ask your manager what you are like at some point.

Cool... I have been looking into doing a CIM course myself - which one did you do? I think I have to do the Diploma :\ hard work though - good luck with the results.

as with others, in general you should have your managers agreement for the application.
if you dont have to, its best to let them know regardless.
