My mate installed his Sky broadband today and all went ok but every now and then the internet goes off and it says something like, Aquiring IP address!! This happens with the ethernet and Wireless setups.

He has tried rebooting router etc but no joy.

Any ideas why this keep happening please? Ta

Does it happen on all machines attached to the broadband? Any indication (light activity) on the sky modem there might be a problem with that? Sounds like a problem with the modem to me.

Do you think that is the problem though? It should be like that should it?

Some routers don't seem to like the TCP/IP stack in Vista. DHCP is a handy facility, but doesn't always work. In those circumstances, setting up an IP address manually is the easiest way round it.

But there again, you haven't told us what the OS is, and this is necessary information for troubleshooting.

Point of interest: do Sky actually give you a static IP? If it does, great. If it's like most other ISPs and gives you a dynamic IP, won't that be a bit of a headache involving re-configuring the static IP every time it renews?

Feel free to insult me if Sky do supply static IPs, or if I'm totally wrong (quite often the case :D)

Not sure if sky use static or not (most likely not as most providers use leased IPs) so I could insult ya but I won't. Besides on leased IPs the modem auto-retrieves the new lease when it expires, it's completely seamless as far as continued usage is concerned.

Errm anyhoo sounds like possibly a modem/router problem, I presume the box is well ventilated and not sitting in an oven? :D

Or like kennethross says, could be incompatibility with OS

When you set up an IP address manually, you are only doing so for your own LAN. Whether you have a static or dynamic IP (facing the internet) from your ISP is immaterial.

How do you use a different wireless modem with sky broadband? it doing the same on my computer it connecting but it not aquiring IP Address?

I have problems with Norton Internet Security whereby the NIC would loose its IP and my PC would require a reboot to get it's IP back. Removing Norton and installing Avast! sorted this. A mate at work had exactly the same problem.
