ArcheAge, Ultima Online's rebirth?

What sort of thing are you looking for? Theres several hundred mmos on the market, chances are that someone here has played one that ticks your boxes, maybe one you havent considered trying.

Open-world, sandbox, tab target MMO, where ranged is ranged and not restricted to 20m, good crafting, player economy, things to do bar fighting eg housing, open world PVP, not level based but skill based. The only game I've ever found so far I've really really clicked with were pre-CU SWG, Vanguard SOH and EVE Online. I like aspects of the all the others but never really found them all in one package and is why I had hopes for Archeage.

A shame you missed out on Ultima Online back in 1997, that had pretty much all of that

I know. Wasn't gaming back then I am afraid.

Anyway had another go on Archeage this evening. Restarted with an archery based character. I'll stick with it for a bit and see if it grows. I do like the way you get the mount so early that's a nice touch and I guess it is needed as the world seems a decent size.

game is nothing like GW2.

for many it is the game we have been waiting for since lineage 2.

cash shop is getting a little greedy for my liking but I don't care, when it gets to the point it gives it a legit unfair advantage then I'll call it quits.

PS labor pots don't count.

PvP !! That's all I care about, I don't want a game that's a second job so no farming, no building and no crafting.

Will I be able to play through all the content, reach level cap and PvP all day without a subscription?

Yup, you can play through, reach level cap and PvP without a subscription.

Well Mr Tombstone, I may not have a subscription but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. I will pursue you, I will look for you, I will find you and I will steal all your potatos !!!

cheers :)

Well Sir Potatothief !, I myself may have a farmers spade, but I have pvp'ed since 1997 and I can assure you that I will defend my crops with vigour and violence in equal measure ! :D

Tombstone, it seems you're quite a fan of the game. I'd be interested in hearing what about it you really like - I need some incentive to play the game as I've got no interest at the moment, and spent a fair bit on the founder's pack. Is there anything you particularly dislike?

I dislike that the dye system is weak, as I love good dye systems. I dislike that the pvp flagging is a bit hit and miss. I dislike that the seas are so barren underwater, would like to see more content down there :)

I dislike the music , but having said that, I always turn the music off in games anyway otherwise I cant hear what people are saying on voice chat. Would like to see a little more variety in clothing, but can live with that.

What I really like about it... just the plethora of features, some of which I listed above. One of the worst things I encounter in MMOs is that point of the game where you are just stood about, in town, thinking..well, what shall I do now? Despite the months that I played Alpha in Archeage, I always had something to do, whether it was a dungeon, pvp, a trade route, resource gathering or farming or whatever.

Its not the best looking mmo, its got flaws, but for me at least, the amount of game features is unmatched and enough to outweigh the cons. One of the things I really like about it, is its focus on the need to work together with other players, for too long I have flipped from one MMO to another, trying to recapture an MMO where there was actually a reason to involve other players.

Ok - after the last post I ignored the fact I though it initially looked a bit GW2 in the aesthetics departments and carried on with the actual game. Anyway I got to the point where I was really enjoying it then I looked at the clock and it was 04:15 so I figured yeh I really did enjoy it. :D

So I've splashed some cash. However, I am late to the party and haven't really tested it properly. What are your tips for what I need to do - from what I gather I need to sort out housing spots real quick as soon as the headstart commences. Any tips here or any other tips at all. I liked the ranger class best in the end. I am expecting ranged will be the thing for PVP.

My tips would be to plan your build in advance, yes you can respec the 3 skill trees but you start from scratch with them.

If PVP is your thing then it's hard to ignore shadowplay as a skill line due to stealth and a few other skills, synergy is good with archery. Stone arrow is a solid build.

Get your farm and housing down first in head start before all the land is gone.

Find a good guild and be active, the game thrives on team play.

Try a bit of everything as it's great fun.

My biggest gripe with this game is the draw distances especially at sea, in the whole game it's far to short but on sea the ships are next to you and attacking you before you have time to react.

Increase this by double and I'd be happy.

Yep, I was going Archery and Shadowplay the third choice though is something I am not so sure on yet but I am erring towards Vitalism as it seems to have a decent synergy in a few skills. I will mostly PVP targeting down runners etc.

In relation to the housing then I will read up on that and make it my first job when the servers are online.

Where can I get some good "noob" info on this game?

It sounds really good from what I've heard and I'm tempted to get a founders pack so I can grab myself a housing plot etc during the headstart. But I don't really know that much about the game and have seen no gameplay etc yet (will look on youtube after work today).

Just wanting something/somewhere I can have a good read etc and see if it's for me before ordering. Any ideas?

Wish I'd jumped on during the open beta, completely forgot about it, too engrossed in Wildstar!

Not liking all this talk of P2W though that I've just read over the last couple pages, will have to look in to this properly before I purchase the game.

Looks like they have gone pay2win. They have shortened the cooldown on the potions you can buy and made it so that you can use them on all of your characters.

Thats why I wish they had made it subscription only, no free accounts, no cash-shop.

But thats ok, I can live with it. The pay2win impact is actually quite overblown really, and lets face it, most things in life are pay2win. I lose in a PvP fight in a game because my ping is worse than the other guy because the other guy has paid to have better broadband than me. I lose out because a guy paid more for a better PC than me and can run a game better. I lose in PvP in a game because the other guy paid more than me for his uber mouse and macro gaming keyboard. I have a more uncomfortable flight on a plane because the other guy paid more for his seat than me. My hotel room is not as good as the other guy because he paid more than me.

Its just life, so Im content to roll with it :)
