Are 4 seater convertibles immoral?:p

I bought a lovely N reg E36 evo convertible about 12years ago, loved every minute of it.

It did have a lot of wind noise but came with a hardtop to go over the top during winter.

I was pretty sad when i got rid of it :(

Quality. They all rattle and all feel heavy, certainly the ones I've driven at least. Lopping off the roof simply adds to many negatives to make it worthwhile in my book.

Feel clumsy, but I still think the looks get me the most, especially as said the saloons with the top just sawn off

I've had 2 four seater convertibles. Loved them both. Currently have the A4 Cabriolet.

Why did I buy it? Because it was the car that covered most bases, i.e.. the best compromise.

Some people will talk about handling and performance that is dulled by the weight. Well sure, if you're Jason Plato or Lewis Hamilton on track then it would be an issue. Day to day it makes no difference at all. Economy is a far bigger concern to me.

I've had smaller open tops too. Boxster S and VX Turbo included. Yes they're much better to drive but would spend most of the time in the garage. Work and two kids under 6 make them an expensive luxury.

So, this is my point of view... Audi A4, standard family car. Compromised rear space which is not a problem with small people but we all get to enjoy open top motoring. Personally I love it, I love it so much it can change my mood completely.

I like the looks too. The only criticism is that the A4 cab looks like a saloon that has the roof cut off whereas the 3 series cab (old and new) looks better in my eyes because it looks like a coupe that has been cut down.

Extra weight will harm the economy too :p

Try not to get T-boned by anyone!

Did you post that because you'd heard that A4 cabs are bad in crashes or side impacts? Do they have a reputation of being worse than any other four seat cab?

You're not wrong. 5-10mpg across the range i reckon from anecdotal evidence.

Just something I had to take on the chin as the price to pay for open top motoring.

I guess what I was saying earlier is that when I bought this car the attitude was of buying a standard family car that had the bonus of a roof that opens. If I'd gone into the purchase looking for a sporting car my attitude would be totally different towards it I imagine.
