Are American laptops compatible in the UK

Most power supplies are dual voltage so will automatically switch as required, obviously you'll have a different keyboard layout and potentially some software licencing conflicts but that's more unlikely. I believe with most laptop PSUs now you can simply switch the plug segment that leads to the power brick but check before you purchase that this is the case.

yes they are compatible, just need a plug adaptor.

However you will probably be raped sideways and upside-down by customs and vat

In general, importing computer hardware from The States is not worth it unless you get it for very very cheap.

+1

well i was thinking alienware, dunno if im meant to mention other companies on this forum

:/, and the laptops are exactly the same price as the UK version so as a result when

converted into GBP are **** cheaper! not sure what added charges would occur apart

from shipping

well 15% VAT (17.5% in January), and some sort of customs handling charge.

Also you have to think about warranty issues. If something happens (alienware is dell, so expect it to) you will probably have to ship it back to the states.

ye, i think there should be a law about making gaming laptops cheaper :P, guess ill get a

desktop instead lol

The customs charge might be bigger than you expect, so i'd make sure you check that first - along with delivery and VAT, it's not usually worth it.

Also, some American companies won't post to European addresses. If you try to order a dell/alienware, they will probably refer you to their UK arm.

If you are able to get one, Dell's warranty is international - they will be honoured by the UK branch of the company, so you wouldn't need to send to the states. Not sure about alienware (I know it's the same company, but it might still work differently).

When you add on the VAT, shipping, surcharge for courier dealing with customs, import tax and possible void warrenty it's probably not worth it. Plus a lot of US website's won't ship to places outside the US.

Chances are if you dont order from abroad a lot you wont get a customs charge. Its the chance you take, but if your good with laptops and can sort any problems yourself go for it.

I have relatives in the US, so i would put their address as mine and then my relatives would send it to me.
