Like humans. Some are smart, some are stupid.

One of my parent's cats cant figure out how to scoop dried food out of an open box with her paws.

Depends on the species and to a lesser degree the individual animal.

I think one of my dogs is fairly clever. I'm certain he's managed to work out that there is a 7 day cycle as he knows what time he gets walked on specific days. On the other hand my other dog is thick as mince.
