Are Audi losing the plot on their key USP, i.e. nice interiors?

You were not talking about how things look though. You were talking about how things feel, which is what I was referencing?

1. That's not a question, so no question mark is required.

2. Can you please quote what I said that lead you to believe that I was referring only to feel and not to look? I never touch my instrument cluster, but I care that it looks smart and of reasonable quality.

The question mark is there to show it's being said in a sarcy rhetorical question kind of manner.

My a6 is a pretty nice place to be but it does have quite a few options. However I had an a4 for the day when mine was in for service and I thought it was pretty average to be honest, certainly no better than a vw

1. Don't be pedantic. For once you and I are actually having a sensible conversation, it makes a decent change.

2. I beg your pardon, I got you muddled with the OP who did mention the feel. I think my point is still valid though, in general not particularly aimed at you. "I love the car but the floor mats just didn't feel right under my shoes" :/

It always amuses me when people say this mostly for the reasons Robbie G has outlined already. It's such a ridiculous thing to say.

It's when people say "I LOVED the car but the interior was just painful on my eye sockets"

Err...how long do they spend looking at the poxy interior for it to bother them that much?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a nice looking interior and loved it when I drove a new A6 3.0TDI S-Line jobby for a couple of hours, was awesome, and I agree, very nice place to be in....but I wouldn't ever let that affect me buying a car. For example, if a car was perfect for me in every shape and form BUT the interior was gash I wouldn't let it get to me. :)

100% of the time you spend driving a car, you spend it sitting in the interior. It surrounds you. It's everywhere. Everything you touch, interace with, glance at and use is the interior.

Yep...but it really doesn't bother me at all. I might take a pic of the van interior if you prep yourself with a sick bucket first :p

As much as the exterior is important, the interior is more important.
This is why people like my father spec cars to the brim on the inside, but really couldn't care less about things which cannot be seen from the the driver's seat..

How odd they do indeed seem to be going backwards, for example most things VAG from around 1998 - 2004 had Chrome door interior door handles, the dash / console surrounds and stuff on the door pulls on the more expensive models is alloy with your choice of print / effect printed over the top, not cheap plastic / fake wood.

Everyone is doing this, not just Audi :(

I was surprised that even BMWs built by Americans 10 years ago are of better quality than the stuff Munich's churning out these days..

Sorry for bringing BMW into an Audi thread :o

Can't think of a car where this is the case..
E36/8 v E81.

Perhaps it's that crappy plastic strip across the dash with the nasty bottom edge, but the E81 is a horrible place to be.

This thread is about interior quality not style :)

I can see what people mean about the plastics after driving nearly brand new VW's but I honestly don't care, I prefer a nice style. I love the digital meters and stuff but the dash looks erm, worse than most cars imo, prefer some fake wood than black plastic tbh. I honestly don't give a hoot about the feel of the indicator or the door handles as long as it looks okay and does it's job.

In the interior I like:
Simply ''okay'' looking things, it doesn't have to look like some guy with OCD designed it.
Comfy chair.
Big and lots of buttons.
Lights/screens.

Another question for you - do you care about the quality of materials in your living room, bathroom, or bedroom?

No, I buy the cheapest that works, I sleep on a 20€ bed and buy the cheapest most functional ( read as, the biggest and the ones with the most drawers) desks. For my living room or bedroom I'll always think function>price>looks
so if you care about quality of materials there
Nope.
, you should certainly care about the quality of materials in your car cabin.
Nope.

Who drive crap cars hmmm, fair enough I don't drive in high specced executive cars but I drive 4 cars regularly ( V40&Galant daily, C5 & corolla weekly basis) and various different cars at work daily ( Brand new VW's, Fords and Renaults) and quite frankly, the only things that I notice are:

Seats ( first thing I notice when I go from my own to another car, the seats feel far less supportive and feel crap, compared to both the galant and the v40 ).
Pedal&gear feel ( clutch, brake, greaknob and throttle, takes getting used to when some are extremely light and some like in an old ford transit are extremely hard where it feels like you're driving a tank).
Steering wheel ( the shape/feel, and the feedback and ease of turning it)
Options.

Aside from those, I notice little details like the screens near the speedo/rev meters in new VW's telling you when to shift up and down, but quite frankly, I don't give a hoot how the rest of the interior looks or feels like like doors or the dash or the indicator or the air vents etcetc.

snowdog, do you not enjoy any quality things in your life at all?

The sound of an engine, the graphics of a pc game, a nice big full hd tv yeah, good quality sound over just ''loud'' sound, comfy chair, etc ? Yeah.

An expensive desk, bed, bathroom, door handle, thunk of a door ? No, as long as they work and are practical, I prefer to spend the money elsewhere ( on above things).

Another example is I had an el cheapo case for a tenner for my pc, I bought a nice expensive case because of recommendations of others, and frankly, I don't think it was a good buy, more a waste of money...
