Are Bethesda games inherently unstable?

With all the Skyrim hype, I decided to give Morrowind a go. It crashes to desktop with no explanation after about 10 to 15 minutes of play, every time I load it up. I then decided to give up on Morrowind and try Oblivion. This time, it crashes every time I get past the character creation bit. Loading the autosave causes a crash too. Again, no explanation or error box, just "this program has encountered an error". And then I remembered that I've never been able to play Fallout 3 without it crashing to desktop either.

I've never had this problem in other games, it seems to be an exclusive Bethesda feature. Any ideas what might be going on? PC spec in sig.

Maybe for you but I've never had a problem with them. Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout and Skyrim have all been exceptionally stable for me.

No crashes in game but oblivion crashed when i tried to exit the game, it just couldnt understand why someone would want to stop playing.

Are you running in compatability mode as win xp?

Hey, how about that. Running it in WinXP compatibility mode helps. It's still not perfect because it does freeze sometimes, but it recovers.

Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, they've all provided me the massive annoyance of CTD.
This has been over the years on different computers, different operating systemsm different patch levels.
The thing is though, the games are so good, you can put up with the odd crash.

Skyrim is a huge improvement in performance and general bugyness than previous games that Bethesda have made.

I have high hopes for Fallout 4, after seeing how well Skyrim runs.

Ok try turning your sound to 24 bit 44100hz for the sound device you are using in the playback settings.

Did you just google a random fix with no relation to his problem. O_o

This tbh. It's been exceptionally smooth going compared to Oblivion and FO3, but none of the Betheda games have been particularly bad for me.*

*Except when I go OTT with mods... :p

With my latest PC, I had the exact same issue with Morrowind. Crashes to desktop after 10 minutes with no explanation.

Skyrim however has been perfect. No issues what-so-ever.

I seem to recall Morrowind didn't like crossfire enabled on my 4870X2, not surprising given the age of the game. Once disabled everything was fine iirc. Otherwise, I've found Bethesda games quite stable even though I appreciate others have experienced quite a few more problems than I have; their titles do have a reputation for this.
