Are CRTs bad?

Just like my Dell P1230, which is now dying. It's sad how devestating this actually is for me - I'm gutted :(

I feel your pain, they are great monitors! I picked two up from eBay for 75 euros per monitor, the companies didn't want them anymore. But they were so great for gaming and everything else to me so I was really happy. And it's funny how impressed everyone was with the monitors even when they were that old. I've still got a IBM P275 at my parents place. I'll keep that for nostalgic reasons :D Sold my Dell P1230 to my friend who is still gaming with it and loving it.

Since going TFT (Dell 2407 here), I've noticed I do not get as tired behind the monitor, and I've not run anything less than 100Hz on a CRT for over 6 years.

The biggest thing I miss about the CRT was CS 1.6, native 800x600, 100Hz refresh rate and vsync on. I hate gaming these days with input lag and lack of vsync or 100FPS.

The trouble is, most games now put you at a disadvantage if you do not have a widescreen due to the lower FOV, otherwise I'd go find a nice CRT just for gaming.

As a side note - how anyone has ever used a CRT at 60Hz, I cannot understand - my very first 15" monitor years ago even did 75Hz at 1024x768 - 60hz was unbearable in my ignorance then, and would be like torture these days.

Iv just changed to an LCD for the first time after using a Compaq P1220 21" which has a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro tube in it. I got a new s-ips LCD the HP LP2475w because I knew a cheaper low end LCD would simply not be an upgrade. I must admit that the picture on the HP LP2475w is the best image iv seen on a an LCD to date but its just not quite as sharpe as the P1220. The P1220 was simple the best monitor Iv ever seen period! Crystal clear pin sharpe images and a supported resolution of well above 1600 x 1200 at 85hz.

I only upgraded to the LCD because I like the look and the additional horizontal space I have via the wide screen. Also the one thing about LCD monitors that is superior to the CRT is in screen geometry which with CRT there is always slight distortions at the coners and edge of the screen.

I still have the P1220 and wont be getting rid of it as it only really needs a calibration but I dont know where to store this huge beast of a monitor.
