Hi all,

I was just wondering (knowing nothing about sound/speakers etc.) whether my speakers are any good, and my amp? I ask because they were my girlfriend's before I claimed them, and she says they are good but I am not sure. Pics attached. Thx for any info ;)

Amp is a Marantz PM-44SE -mk II

Equalizer is a Sony SEQ-411.

Just make your own decisions based on what you hear, you don't need anyone to confirm there technical "goodness" :p

I haven't seen these before but if that frequency response is accurate then thats the wierdest response I've ever seen . Don't know why you'd publish something like that on the back, it can't be real anyhow.

All I could tell you is they should go quite loud, the response shows around 95db averge sensitivity which is somewhat higher than mosy Hi-Fi gear.

Google results for the speaker arn't too flattering though :

Could be true, like I say, never heard of the make and construction doesn't look very professional.

Amp looks fine and reputable, EQ is optional.

yeah google looks bad - but, if they sound good then it's OK. You might want to look into replacing the drive units and building a small crossover if the cabinets are any good. they do look a bit like PA style speakers.

Amp looks grand.

However any speaker set that has a diagram of their frequency response on the back is bad news. Especially one that is so un-flat! :D

I have one of those Marantz amps. Very good in its day, and nothing wrong with them now!

I think they were around £100 to £120 in Richer Sounds.

It's a competent amp but nothing to write home about.

p.s. Speakers in a fluffy jacket more often than not = Meh.

the amps ok, but the speakers are crap - could you borrow some decent ones of somebody just so you can hear the difference? then you could decide if its worth getting another pair.

Well, that settles that. Seems a strange thing to try and "flog" this way but I guess many people don't know about speakers at all and its not something that is likely to be dangerous (like a wheel for a car, which you would hopefully reject on those grounds!). They don't have a marked impedence however so they could potentially damage your amplifier if it is unusually low (<4ohm).

The compact disc logo is pretty funny on them, how is that relevant?! I could put an energy effeciency sticker on my kitchen worktop and it'd be about as meaningful.

Yeah I googled and got that thread about the speakers pretty much straight away after posting the OP...

The thing is, (and maybe I'm used to them) but I don't think they sound as bad as they're being made out to, I'm usually quite picky as well, hmmm :)

Got a nice bass response, high pitches sound good as well. Audio is quite a subjective thing I guess :/

I think they sound fine as they are but then again I could go out and get a £400 set of speakers and I'll probably be picking my jaw up off the floor

------------ what sort of things do you look for when listening to see if a speaker isn't any good????

If your happy with them and they didnt cost you much then thats the main thing.

They are pretty much just mdf boxs with a mix of low end components thrown in. now if there were sold as just that then fine. But these and many other white van goods are dressed up to be something there not. As mentioned the frequency graph may as well be a doodle of Homer Simpson and the 'Digital Disc Digital Audio' logo on the back, you may as well stick a jam donut on the back, it would be just as relevant.

There are also quite a few reports of these white van speakers causing damage. at worse to amps there hooked up to, at best the speakers just blow after not much use. but again if you have used them for a while then im sure they will be fine mate.
