It's been a few years, but i used to run a weekly Gaming LAN and am looking at doing the same after having moved...

Basically, upto a dozen or so people, LAN gaming but almost certainly without internet...

Is it still possible? We used to play all sorts of driving/fps games.... But it seems to me that they all now need a live net connection... Can we play the latest CoD games offline, or is that only in the realms of skid row etc?

Depends on what games you want to play.

You'd have to shortlist the most popular ones and then just test / find out if it's possible.

You may find yourself restricted with some older titles, but a lot of them are classic & timeless anyway. There are tons of guides on what games to play at LANs, so have a look around and good luck :)

Nah ! LAN still works, just have people bring their own pcs for things like COD where the levelling system resets if you have the game license floating between machines.

my friend ran a LAN centre up until last year, was workig fine for him.

would love another LAN :)

Cheers gents,

Looking at the latest COD and BF4, i'm not certain they are going to work...

Last time we were doing this kind of thing, AlterIW was around and helped massively. Most games had dedicated servers we could run, or ran with in-game servers for Flatout2 etc....

I'm sure there's a way, depending on location might even be able to piggy-back on an unsecure WIFI...

Forget playing BF4 on a LAN. They won't add LAN support because they want people to rent licensed servers. Greedy sods.

The best games are the old ones UT and Age of empires and they are good fun on LAN too. even the older CODs like COD 2

I think I'll stick to CODMW unless I can find a patch of newer ones...

L4D2 and other HL mods, Garry's Mod for example

I think the new Counterstrike has a LAN option too...

Need a bit of variety from the driving games now I think... Flatout2 is a blast but will try to find some newer stuff

The majority of Source based Multiplayer games you can create a dedicated server for and install the mods no messing.

Much better than running it as an echo server. If you have any old hardware knocking about a Pentium 4 with 4Gb of mem will have enough grunt for a Source Server and a UT2004 server to run concurrently. UT2004 is a bitch to set up mind

RTS games are good for LAN too actually, c&c etc

I'm a big Blizzard (Warcraft/Starcraft) fan, but I tend to find that people are happier playing quick games than longer ones...

Hence why drivers/FPS usually win out...
