The last week or so although the download speeds have been ok,it seems to have more latency - I'll click on a hypertext link and there is a dial-up type of delay before the page loads, on many different websites.

i am also noticing increased pings on the mmo i play and so today i did a speedtest on adslguide and voila! carptastic!test results

anyone on nildram have any thoughts on that particular isp because i think i am ready to migrate.

as long as i can download say, 30 gig per month thats all i need.

discuss.

I'd suggest trying the BT Speedtest etc before being so sure it's a Pipex issue.
You do know you can just post the link to the speedtest result page though? :p

I'll agree thats pretty crappy, I get 1900, and thats through a wireless bridge to my router, then through wireless to my laptop :p.

Try adjusting MTU and RWIN settings, also try removing any unnecessary protocols from the connection.

Nildram have very good techies and problems are usually resolved fairly promptly - they have always been regarded as a gamers isp since the dialup days in the 90s. You get 50gig download between 8am->midnight (00:00-08:00 is unmetered) so they would probably suit you.

They aren't the cheapest but that combined with the usage cap dissuades all the leechers from signing up and maintains a good level of service for the most part.

I've had ADSL from Nildram for over 4 years now and have seen no reason to change. I ping around 12-14ms and download is always 240k/sec.

Bear in mind that Nildram were taken over by Pipex a while back, so it can't be guarenteed that the high level of service will remain forever.

To be honest un-optimised mtu/rwin shoudn't make such a horrific impact on speed. He's noticed a degredation in performance from before, so his settings are probably not to blame. My guess would be either exchange congestion (check on samknows), a restricted issue with his isp (perhaps a certain pipe is overloaded but not others...), or even something more untoward like spyware/virusses/network users slowing things down.

Waste of time.
Samknows isn't up to date (Data last updated: 16 August 2005, 21:50:27 for me), and even it was, it isn't real time data. Nor does it tell you if you'll see any congestion, just whether the exchange's VPs are within BTw's performance specs.

The only real way to tell if it's an ISP issue or not is to run an ISP-independant speedtest (ie the BT Speedtest).

A dodgy MTU could, and having uneeded protocols also could, but Rwin, probably not. Could be plenty of other things as you say though.

Can we give out links to that?

If you're getting poorer speeds on the BT Speedtest, then your problem isn't with Pipex, and would most likely follow you wherever you go.

i guess that's aimed at me. yup i'm aware of that.... :)

i'm not too worried about getting slower than the full whack speeds as i don't really download much these days. it's when it affects my usual browsing that i get tee'd off. luckily that doesn't happen too often.

Pipex hasn't been great for me recently. Speeds are varying wildly between dial-up to 232. Probably my exchance getting conjested again! Roll on April when ADSL2+ comes to my exchange!!!

thanks for all the input guys ! :)

its very interesting reading;of course the internet being what it is,performance can vary from day to day...im just a little bit concerned -- how far and how long are you expected to see youre usual speeds degrade before it becomes an issue ??

maybe pipex are just having a "bad hair week" so to speak-- i hope so because of late they are kinda sucky hehe.

I'm on 2mb unlimited and have the pleasure of being restricted between 6-11pm ish. But recently I've been abale to breakthough the restriction they impose and download at the full 2mb speed. So I can't complain too much.
