Are sports going backwards in this country?

This tends to have a calamitous effect later on when we're left with a team of lumbering donkeys.

Would you be thinking of a certain English forward, surname rhymes with 'pesky'?

I don't think that it will ever be able to remove competitiveness entirely from sports at school if that is or was an aim - kids tend to notice who won and who lost, who's better at football etc etc whether it's highlighted formally or not.

Actually that was the exact specimen that first came to mind.

You're right that kids tend to be sufficiently competitive when left to their own devices. It's not something that requires constant reinforcement by adults.

It's the taking part that counts and all that rubbish these days

I was reading Charlie Spedding's biography a few weeks ago and he got wound up about people using that phrase. I'd never realised it was part of the Olympic creed before:

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

He seems bit miffed that people leave out the "but to have fought well" bit because it makes it sound like competing isn't valuable.

When I was at school the first three got medals and then everyone got a choc ice at the end of the day. I don't get this whole "everyone's a winner" thing, you've got to learn some day that you can't always have everything your own way.

I've always dominated the throwing events. My talent was first spotted when I went to the Fair aged 5/6, not only did I hit and knock over the coconut - it split in half, I got given an extra whole coconut for my efforts. :D
