Are the non binned Intel CPUs the dregs of the silicon lottery ??

Just wondering on the merits of buying a non binned 79XX CPU and taking my chances on the silicon lottery.

Question is though, does 8 Pack try all the 79XX chips for binning, keeps the good ones and sends the dregs back to be sold as "non binned". Essentially skimming off the cream so reducing or eliminating your chances of getting a good clocking " non binned " CPU.

Anyone know ??

I believe if you buy OEM there is a chance you will get the ones that couldn't make the pre-clocked speeds but if you buy retail versions you should get a sealed box and you play the lottery like everyone else.

Thanks

just found a load of threads about this subject.

Would probably buy a retail cpu from somewhere that doesn't bin them.

8 pack says that binned CPUs that don’t make the grade go into systems and aren’t resold.

Personally given some of the complaints of people receiving handelled CPUs and opened RAM I’m not sure I’d take the risk. I’d buy from somewhere that doesn’t bin or stick to retail.

OEM we test does not go back as OEM. In the past this may have happened but months ago I put rules in place to 100% prevent it. Anything we test goes into a binning category, which is why we have several speeds for binned chips.

Not any more and that recent thread turned out to just finger prints as originally though.

Our OEM stock is full on brand new and not used, so the silicon lottery completely applies, you may get a lemon and you may get a super star.

Out of interest Gibbo, it's not that many years ago when most good clocking CPU's were of a known stepping....................is that still the case ? Opteron's, and Wolfdales spring to mind plus of course XP1700's.

I believe there is still truth to this, in the past 8 Pack has asked me to try and source steppings, but right now with coffee lake I buy absolutely everything because it sells so fast. Were shipping around 500 CPU's per day at the moment from OcUK from our whole CPU range, though AMD are the winners in percentage share, Ryzen outsells everything and the Ryzen 5 1600 alone sell 100+ per day its that popular, but it is £159. :)

I was worried about buying a "loser" OEM chip too, but my 8600k will post at 5.3ghz and is AVX load stable at 5.0ghz, so don't worry.

Like I say, the OEM are just as new as retail, anything we buy from our webshop is brand new and un-used. Lets remember OcUK last year did over 50M turnover just focusing on PC gaming, we have kept our focus and this year we will grow again, a lot of people under-estimate the size of us, were sending thousands of shipments every week.

Of course from time to time mistakes are made, but we are quick to rectify them and proud ourselves on our customer service and also our uniqueness in the market place. :)
