Are these drives similar (Samsung)?

Apart from the capacities are these two drives effectively the same?

I have read good reviews here and elsewhere about the sp2504c but for various reasons prefer the 160gb capacity of the hd160jj

I think they're pretty different. The top one is a P120 series which I guess is a 120 (and a bit) gigabyte platter, the second is a P80 so probably an 80Gb platter. That puts both as 2 platter designs so the P80, due to the lower data density, will have a lower sustained transfer rate.

If you only want 160Gb then something like a Hitachi 7K160, WD AAJS or Seagate 7200.10 will give far better performance since they're all single platter designs.

Thank you. I didn't realise that. I might look at the others then as I was thinking of using two in a stripped array so I guess it makes sense to go for the faster drive to start with!
