The number of 16 to 24-year-olds out of work rose from 928,000 to 947,000 - edging closer to the landmark of one million and adding to fears of a new "lost generation" of young people.

My girlfriend has left Uni now and is technically unemployed (as in she has not got a job she wants to work in relating to her degree) she is working part time in a shop but can't get a full time job due to "lack of experience".

im not, but my girlfriend is... she's been job hunting since graduating in July and has applied to over 100 jobs! 90% ignore her... 9% let her know that he application didnt make it to interviews and the final 1% interview her...

its all down to experience apparently... as mentioned in a news article i read... the lacks of jobs is forcing more competition... those just starting out fall to the bottom of the pile of those who are looking... even with a degree.

I'm unemployed and sitting at college right now. Woo, just turned 18 in july though. :\ I've handed out countless CV's... I need to change my approach.

No I think I'll just ask for the manager personally next time and have a nice conversation with him instead "hi lol here's my cv".

Not employed myself. But know one or two people in that age range that are.

One of them is on sickness though (whatever it is called) because he physically can't work at the moment due to having an operation a few weeks ago.

I was until yesterday, managed to get a weekend job (I start Uni soon). I had gone to College and worked previously but I had been out of work for nearly 6 months.

If you are in education and unemployed I don't think you are classed in the 947k, I think its just people claiming JSA/benefits.

I took a part time job in March and worked for a company from 18 till I was 25 till the place shut. Was out of work for about 5 months.

19.7% unemployed in the 16-24 age group! That is pretty ridiculous, I would rather work at mcdonalds than be unemployed, Get a job you bums
