Am thinking about handing in my notice if I get a new job. What I was wondering is can you get signed off by the doctor for 4 weeks and hand in your notice at the same time? Effectively never having to go back there?

And if so.....

Can you hand in your notice and get signed off from your very physical job because it hurts to do it. But at the exact same time start a brand new office type job with no lifting involved?

so not actually having any time off work, but just being signed off the one job and working a different one?

strange question I know, but I may find out next week that I have a great new job and I would be interested to know if I can start straight away :)

Cheers,

G

Ye I think you can do that, I've heard that idea before anyway.

Explain your situation to the GP, there might be a avenue they can offer.

Hmmm .... being sign off whilst on your notice period may well be possible, but working another office job at the same time may be an issue.

You could find that the new company may well not want you to work whilst medically signed off for insurance reasons and also as you are only in your notice period with your existing employer you would probably be in breach of contract there to.

Ive just gone through pretty much what your asking, i was signed off with a slipped disc for 6 weeks in the meantime i was offered another job so i explained the situation to my current boss and told him i would like to leave early and that my note covered me for my 2 weeks notice, luckily he accepted and waived the 2 weeks notice :)

Dear Gaffa,

As required by my contract of employment, I hereby give you notice of my intention to leave my position as <whatever>.

I have decided that it is time to move on and I have accepted a position elsewhere. This was not an easy decision and took a lot of consideration. However, I am confident that my new role will help me to move towards some of the goals I have for my career.

I understand that my notice period is X weeks' but I would like to join my new employer at the earliest date. Therefore, I request that you waive this notice period and relieve me of my duties immediately. Please be assured that I will do all I can to assist in the smooth transfer of my responsibilities before leaving.

I wish both you and <Company> every good fortune and I would like to thank you for having me as part of your team.

Yours sincerely,

Guru

If you are signed off work its actually illegal to work iirc, regardless of what type of work it is, I had been signed off for a week before and went into work after the 2nd day as I had stuff to finish, I was later informed that if HSE found out the company would have been in a lot of trouble.

This is true, it relates to the companies insurance as well I think. We've had people try and come into work (office job) whilst signed off and been sent home again.

Will you get paid for the 4 weeks from the job you are leaving?

I would doubt it, I have had a lot of time off cause of my operations so I think I have used all my sick pay.

At best it would be half pay, but I don't even think I would get that now.
