Since I'm going on holiday tomorrow, I decided to buy myself a few magazines from the local Costcutters and Swift Shop. I didn't really know what I was going to buy since I don't read magazines usually, and I don't know what magazines there are tbh.

I left with FOCUS (something about 50 greatest questions answered - why do clouds float?!) because it looked semi-interesting; HEAT for my sister (come on guys, don't pretend you don't do the quizzes that find your perfect celeb hubby based on what you do at discos! :p :o)... and 360 Gamer (Official = £6 = ripoff).

How is it possible that there are hundreds of magazines, yet so little to actually read? The range is absolutely shocking imo: cars, computers, games, cameras, fishing, and celebrity news. That's it. There really needs to be a larger range of topics; I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels this way.

Maybe it's just these local places that suck so much for interesting topics?

Rant over. :)

Lets makes 500 diferent magazines (about diferent topics  ) that will only sell 20 copies weekly... not gonna work ;)

Well what do you suggest as a topic? The range that a shop sells will be based primarily on the amount of sales it generates and most of the magazines you list are because they are almost unlimited in the upgrades/changes/interest that those topics can generate so therefore will always be big sellers.

You do seem to have a particularly poor newsagent as well, there is a whole lot more of a range than that ranging from political(I use the term loosely but including Private Eye, Spectator etc) to gardening/home(Gardeners World, Ideal Home, Country Living etc) through science(again termed loosely but New Scientist type) to "mens magazines"(FHM, Maxim and all that fluff). There are also more niche markets such as modelling monthly, airgunners delight or whatever so find yourself a better newsagent and look again :)

I personally scarcely buy magazines now because most of what I want I can find on the internet so in a way I do agree but for plane journeys etc they are still worthwhile.

There was a home improvement magazine, actually! Except there was only one, and only one. No political or fishing ones though.

I knew there must've been a particularly small range at my places. :(

I read New Scientist and the occasional medical journal. Nerd. :D

New Scientist is always interesting... :)
There is so much competition for magazines, and with the internet and all, a lot of publishers probably can't compete.

I'm going to try getting a few at the airport, got about £13 change, which shows how little I bought. :p

You missed air gunner and airgun world also model mags such as rc cars etc from your definitive (is that the right word?) list :D . There is a vast array of topics in WH Smith covering most stuff imo.

Mark

Does anybody know if there is a "Young Couples" Magazine for Zefan?
/Joke

Yeah WHsmith has a VERY large range of magazines... :-) good for specialists
