‘Next generation consumer devices based on the Mali-T658 GPU will address the growing user expectation for slick user interfaces and desktop-class graphics,’ said Pete Hutton, general manager, Media Processing Division, ARM.

He added: ‘intuitive user interfaces will mean that consumers can access the full functionality of their connected devices, for richer user experiences. This includes HD gaming and new compute-intensive applications, such as augmented reality.’

Look's like the standard Mali-T604/Midgard architecture but increases the number of cores to 8 (and probably a bit more ARMv8 64bit compatibility)

Recent interview with Jem Davies.

Oh snap, have ARM just outed the Samsung Galaxy S3? Check out that quad core A9/quad core T604 "Superphone" in mid 2012....

Only Samsung will be doing that combo, Tegra 3 hasn't got long on the top :D
(it could also mean the Apple A6 has four A9s over a die shrunk A5?)

Why are nVidia finding it so hard to build a competitive SoC solution? Tegra 2 was fairly underwhelming and Tegra 3 doesn't look like it will hold up to new Malis and PowerVRs.

EDIT - Ok after further reading it looks like Tegra 3 does just fine against e.g. the A5 though the A5 is an older chip (by almost a year?).

whoa whoa whoa, the sources indicate an expected release to smartphones oems within 2 years, but that roadmap shows the 8 core malis to release in 2016? 2016!! yup 2016......sigh

can we at least get the cortex a15 cpus soon, can we stop milking the a9 by adding cores. the a15 is a lot efficient and battery enhancing

Eight Midgard cores will take up a huge amount of die space, they're probably targeting 20nm or less... but that won't stop companies like Apple, Samsung and Sony making a flippin massive SoC for specific devices. nVidia, TI and Qualcomm have to cater for the general phone market.

The more competition the better but that does look a little too late to be useful. 2016 for an 8 core? 2 years for the new design? We have PowerVR and Qualcomm offering better than that in there roadmaps in 6 to 12 months. Also Samsung just took out an SGX MP licence if they add that with the ARM quad core we could have one powerful Smartphone.
