They aren't. They've got rid of a single menu that hardly anyone actually properly used any more anyway. The only thing I use on the Start Menu is the Run prompt. But I don't even access that via the Start Menu, I WinKey+R it. I also use the Start Menu's search box but less frequently and Metro has a better replacement for that anyway.
There really is no issue at all with what they're doing. Nobody uses the Start Menu any more. Microsoft decided to take the opportunity to remove the bloat.
Get over it!
The thing is it's geared towards touch screen use and it'll probably be great for touch screen users, I don't know anyone who has a desktop pc that use's a touch screen mind you, I don't care to much about the start button, what I don't like is the hidden menu's and placing your mouse in corners to do something that ms thought would be great to hide away, just shutting down windows 8 is a chore (yes I know I could just press the power button, but I don't)
To remove bloat, lol, they have added a ton of bloat, not sure who they are trying to impress though, a lot of people can see it's useless bloat on top of a gimped windows 7.
