As we approach the release of Windows 8

1. There is a little arrow/chevron you can use to hide the Explorer ribbon.
2. You're not forced to use a email address, you can create a simple local account as before (although the UI encourages you to do the former)

I'm not 100% cloud convinced either but the whole Microsoft account thing is done quite well. I'm guessing you use web based email? Cloud service. Logging into Windows with your email address and having your email/calendar/contacts/skydrive just ready to go is really convenient.

1. I don't want to hide the ribbon I want the damn thing gone and the original way of doing things put back, it was far easier to use since it hasn't really changed since 95 (give or take a bit). It works and works well so don't mess with it imho.

2. I still don't understand why it wants an email address just because of downloading apps for Metro or whatever. People should be able to download them regardless of logging in with something.

Yes I use web based mail (Gmail via Google Apps) since it's free and never considered that to be cloud based but I guess you have a point. I don't use Windows Live Mail except for use with MSN the rest of the time it is never used because I hate the interface and the fact that I can't use Thunderbird with it.

Windows 8 is basically Marmite... you either love it or hate it and I am in the latter category.

 some people are trying to find the most random complaints.

First of all you need an account todo load apps as most of them will cost money. If you have an email login it'll also sign into accounts. But those aren't the two biggest reasons to have an email login. Windows8 soupy cling and backup features.

I am more than willing to swap to 8 if there is tangible increases in loading speed and resource management for gaming.

Boot speed is much improved and it uses less resources, there are tons of improvements I'm not sure where to start, check out the other w8 thread or the building windows blog.

I'm still using XP and more than happy with it but due to several games now only being Win7 compatible. I may be upgrading to a better GPU soon so I'd like to get a new OS to take advantage of it.

The Question is buy win 7 or 8. All the fancy stuff really doesn't bother me and I can easily wait a few months for 8.

There is nothing random about it. All your replies that I have seem would suggest you work for Microsoft or something since you do nothing but sings Windows 8's praises from the rooftops to every person who comes by.

Good discussion that, well aimed points. There is a lot random about having a go at using an email address, that if you wish you don't have to use.
